Hopewell Lodge

Mike and Lynley are extraordinary hosts: warm, kind and extremely knowledgeable. They went out of their way for us. Hopewell is situated about 30 minutes by boat (water taxi) from Havelock, in a stunning remote corner of the Pelorus Sound. It is peaceful and utterly beautiful. There are heaps of activities on offer, as well as walks and the use of a wonderful kitchen / common room with a roaring fire. Our cabin - with its own private veranda - looked out over the Sound: quite a sight, especially first thing in the morning. Our afternoon sail with Phil from Sounds by Sail was another experience we will never forget. A truly magical stay at Hopewell. We will return!

This was our 2nd stay at Hopewell Lodge and we still really love it. Mike and Lynley have created a unique place where we feel very much at home. Their kindness and openess is something you won’t find in many places. Beds and linens are of very good quality and the shared kitchen is extremely well equipped – there are no shops/restaurants nearby so you need to either bring your own supplies or rely on the fresh pizza they make (if it suits you, it’s also possible to have a supermarket deliver food). There are plenty of facilities to keep you entertained – all included in the price- or you can just relax and enjoy the place. Some reviews may suggest driving there is very hard – we found it perfectly ok. True, driving around the Kenepuru sound takes a couple of hours, and the road is quite twisty, but it’s also really beautiful. There are a only a couple of short gravel sections, but the road is surfaced for 90% of the way and usually plenty wide enough for two cars. The current roadworks (early 26) may mean you need to plan a little, but it’s nothing to worry about. If you prefer not to drive, there are also boat transfers available. However you get there – it is truly wonderful – for us it is a place not to be missed.

Beautiful welcoming hosts, serene atmosphere and friendly community feeling as we settled into two blissful days at Hopewell lodge. If you’re looking for a unique and relaxing getaway with the added bonus (in my opinion) of shared conversations in the wonderfully equipped communal kitchen and while relaxing in a hot pool overlooking the bay, then this is the place. Unforgettable, thank you Lynley and Mike, we will be back!

Un merveilleux séjour, dommage que nous ne soyons pas restés plus longtemps. Des hôtes charmants, un lieu enchanteur, une vue magnifique. La lodge est décorée avec beaucoup de goût, la cuisine est digne d’une cuisine de restaurant, parfaitement équipée et le salon commun est très chaleureux. La première matinée était très pluvieuse, Mike nous a offert des scones tout chauds avec du beurre salé, un régal. En début d’après-midi le temps s’est dégagé et nous avons été ramasser des huîtres avec Mike qui nous les a préparées en beignets et pancakes le soir. Merci encore pour ce délicieux repas et cette belle expérience. Possibilité d’explorer le Sound en canoës depuis le jardin ou de faire du VTT et de la randonnée dans les environs. Vue magnifique du jacuzzi qui réchauffe après un bain dans l’eau froide du Kenepuru Sound. Si vous aimez le calme et la tranquillité, n’hésitez pas une seconde!
