Mount Wood Ella

Nestled in the green forest, the other side of the main road out of Ella, this little slice of heaven was fantastic. Our breakfasts were delicious and varied, leaving us very full up. They were Sri Lankan dishes with fresh fruit and fruit juice. The woodwork in the whole hotel was beautifully done and the small details were appreciated. We particularly enjoyed sitting on our balcony of an evening watching the fireflies and listening to the gushing river below. Chandana and his family were so welcoming. He offered to drive us in his Tuk Tuk around Ella for all of our activities for a really fair price compared to what the ones in town were offering which was super helpful. They also offer a laundry service which we found very useful. For us the distance from the main town was a little too far and along a busy road which we didn’t want to walk along at night after dinner, but you don’t get the remoteness in the hotels in town like you do at Mount Wood Star

Nothing. On balance, if we were to return, we would still prefer to stay out of town slightly.

Uniqueness Small

Beds were a bit hard and two pillows are needed or one bigger one. They were very thin.

Beautiful little hotel with just 2 rooms (they are currently building an extension) with a really warm and lovely family owning it. Rooms are very simple but beautiful and with a lovely view. The balcony is shared between the two rooms. No AC, but the nights are cool enough to sleep with the fan that moves the air a bit around. The moisture in Sri Lankas highlands is always extremely high, so nothing ever really dries ... towels or even the bathroom floor, but that's just the way it is. Breakfast is simple but good and plenty and made with love by a family member. They have 4 very sweet dogs. The owner has his own TukTuk and can take you to Ella whenever you want. Just text him. The distance to Ella is about 45 minutes walking. It is a nice walk when you come back from Ella because it is downhill. Going to Ella it is uphill, very steep and I imagine quite unpleasant after a while next to the busy street. With TukTuk, it takes between 5 and 10 minutes. Bathroom has hot water, you just have to wait a little while for it to get hot. The owner does a great little Tour of the sights around Ella (at a small extra charge) and has some serious driving skills because those side roads are no joke. I was also impressed about the off-road conditions that his TukTuk was able to handle without any problems. I wouldn't have dared some of these roads with my car 😅🤣 He also came to pick me up from the train station. I can really recommend this place. I will be back next year. ❤️

The only thing that could be improved is that, because the head of the bed isn't on the wall and there is no headboard, the pillows sometimes fall between the bed and the wall during the night and you have to go look for them 🤣 but that's really the only thing. Maybe just close that gap with something.

Mount wood star is a beautiful place to stay. It is hard to put the feeling into words of how serene and amazing the place is. The place has been built by the amazing hosts and their attention to creating a natural and beautiful environment does not go unnoticed. Ella town is only a short drive away, and it’s also walkable if you feel up for it. We walked home from ella at night and felt safe. If you want to live out your tree house dream then this is the place for you! Lots of beautiful birds and cute squirrels around. *Some other reviews were talking about noise from trucks etc but we did not have any issues with this and honestly slept wonderfully. Also the dogs living next door with the family are the cutest ever. I miss them!!

Very impressive property with amazing views! Room was large & clean with a fridge! Not really walkable into Ella as busy road but ample tuk tuks and owner can help arrange! Short drive to little Adam’s peak and nine arch bridges! Place next door does great rotis and will make things on request

Not necessarily the properties fault but very loud, earplugs are a must! It was heavily raining when we stayed which added to the noise but noise road & river were loud on their own. Also take some time to sort out the mosquito net!

The view was what was it all about. Stunning! Good breakfast, very friendly owners. Bed was comfy.

The accommodation was simply unique. The house looks inconspicuous from the outside, but behind it is a kind of tree house made of natural wood. We loved sitting on a beanbag and looking down the mountain into the beautiful natural surroundings, listening to the sounds of the jungle and the rushing of a stream. We were even visited by fireflies in the evening. The owner is simply wonderful and extremely helpful. He drove us to nearby Ella in his tuktuk at all times and advised us on our activities. The breakfast was also great for the price! We loved it and would come back again and again!

Little improvement proposal to add dinner in Future (or possibility to Order via Pick-Me)

The hotel has a beautiful and cozy atmosphere, thanks to its all-wood design. With only two rooms, it feels very personal and family-like. The breakfast is delicious, offering toast, eggs, jam, butter, coffee or tea, and a smoothie. The affordable tuk-tuk service to Ella and laundry service for 1000 rupees per kilo are super convenient. A highlight is the stunning green view – right from the bed!

Unfortunately, the water pressure is extremely low, which can be inconvenient. Additionally, the hotel is located right next to a road, making it quite noisy – something that wasn’t made very clear in the description.
