Waterberg Game Lodge

The lodge has a beautiful setting overlooking a dam filled with lilies (sometimes the hippos come to visit too). Two game drives a day are included (and not clearly advertised). You can see plains game (including Sable and Eland herds) plus buffalo and hippo. For this reason you can’t walk/run/cycle around the reserve on your own. The managers and ranger went out of their way to accommodate our needs. They drove us to the neighbouring golf estate (Elements) every morning so that we could run. They even fetched us with water waiting in the vehicle. Game drives were pleasant with complimentary sunset drinks. The food was really good, hearty and delicious - homemade luxury is how I would describe it. Think homemade breads, home made ice cream, fillet steak cooked to perfection served with a sherry butter sauce, delicious home baked chicken pie … Everyone is friendly. Pets are welcome. All rooms have views over the dam. There are self catering options if you prefer.

We were there over a busy long weekend and when the lodge gets full, it can be noisy and privacy is illusive. While the communal lounge and patio areas are well appointed and lovely, it felt a bit cramped - like there wasn’t enough communal space for the number of guests there. Add to that kids and pets and it takes away the serene bush experience we were after. The rooms are set close together along a narrow wooden walkway that doubles up as a porch with two chairs per room you can sit on. The problem with this is that the walkway is noisy and narrow and passers-by can look right into your room. I would have enjoyed a private patio or screened off sections along the decking to allow for some privacy. We had to sit in our room with the curtains closed to get privacy. I would return here for a midweek stay perhaps as the lodge is lovely when quieter.

The food was awesome. The steak was tender and tasty and my man cleaned up the chicken pie dish. There was plenty food for the 2 of us but we couldn't stop. My poor man thought he had enough until the home made ice cream came. And he is a sucker for ice cream!

The food was mediocre at best, I’d that can be improved on then I’d happily be a regular guest.

Fresh well prepared breakfast. Good for a short safai vacation

The rooms are too expensive for what is offered.

Excellent breakfast and dinner. Could not ask for better.

The bed mattress was slightly too soft
