HummingBird Hill Cottage

We stayed at Hummingbird Hill Cottage for one night and had an exceptional experience. The cottage was clean, stylish, and spacious with excellent service at dinner. The food was delicious and great value for money, with attentive and efficient service. The room was well-equipped and comfortable, with heaters in every room, a 55-inch flat-screen TV with satellite connection, perfect hot water, and beautifully designed wood floors. I was amazed by everything and believe this is one of the best cottages in Nuwara Eliya. It will definitely be one of my first choices to visit again. Highly recommended!

This is the first time my family visited to Sri Lanka all the way from overseas. They had heard about how amazing Sri Lanka people and their kind hospitality of the locals. But once we reached to Nuwara Eliya Hummingbird Hills Cottage, everything was far from our expectations. I have attached all the pics and conversations as evidence and let future guests know how this property owner lady treat us. We arrived to the hummingbird hills cottage around 10:30 p.m with my family. First thing it’s difficult take the vehicle up to the cottage. Road is not in good condition. Once we entered to the place we were found one cctv monitor hidden inside a cupboard. Few cameras were blank and few cameras are seen outside. We asked about this from the owner through WhatsApp since there was no responsible person to talk at the property, And once we entered to our room we found some rubbish inside the drawers and cupboard. I sent some pictures and inform the lady owner. Her reply was she don’t want like us complaint guest and suggest us to check out. That was her solution. Then next day morning they promised us they will arrange take away breakfast for us and at 5:00a.m since we had planned to go to see the sunrise and hiking. When we going to living room to collect it, there were no breakfast arranged. We waited until 5:15a.m then suddenly one of their staff came and kept one plate full of the white slice breads, one plate of sausages and one bowl of hard boiled eggs on the table. This breakfast service was definitely not what we had expected. We had been to many other hotels and when we informed the hotel that we need morning breakfast packed, our breakfast were all nicely packed individually, not like this hummingbird hills where the staff just leave the items on the table. There was not jam and butter until I had to ask the staff and he give us one butter and jam bottle and said to pack our breakfast ourselves and give us newspapers to pack!

The cottage is located up the hill with a wonderful view. Compared to our other accommodations it’s quite and beautiful just 10 minutes outside of Newara Eliya. You can reach the city by bus, the bus stop is just down the hill. Vasanth was our host and did an amazing job. He served excellent breakfast and we felt like home. Nothing was missing and the beds were really comfortable. We enjoyed our stay and can highly recommend this cottage.

Really nice view. Big bedrooms, nice dining room and kitchen. Owner super responsive and helpful.

Place in need of a revamp or at least a thorough clean. Smoken cigarettes still left around, bathrooms needed a good clean and the beds had stains and hairs on them - not sure if they had been changed from previous guest.

The location of the property was just right for us, neither too close nor too far from the city centre! We stayed for two nights. The staff provided exceptional service and were quite friendly. They also helped to prepare delicious dinners on both the days of our stay! Huge thanks to Selvaraj and Vasanth for going out of the way to make us feel at home. Hummingbird is a perfect place for a home away from home!! Thanks to the entire team for their exemplary service and making our stay comfortable!

Hand towels and toiletries like toothbrush etc. could be provided in the bathrooms

On arrival (which was late in the night), we had Vasanth greet us and help settle us in. He is an excellent cook, an expert in getting us to places that we need to go and went the extra mile to ensure we were comfortable. He is truly an asset to the owner/s of this cottage. Thank you Vasanth!

The cottage is stunning - it was as if we were transported to the English countryside. We checked in a day after Christmas and the cottage was beautifully decorated, with even a digital fireplace. The fit out seems new and the kitchen was well equipped with utensils. The highlight of our stay was Ramesh - the chef and overall caretaker of the property. Not only is he excellent at cooking Sri Lankan food, he was very helpful with our requests - helping us out with a smile throughout! Ramesh was key to the joyful stay we had at the cottage.

The bathrooms were missing hand towels. WiFi signal could be stronger.

Host was amazing - home cooked food in the morning was absolutely beautiful. Made us feel very welcome. Very clean and warm with heaters in every room.

Bit dusty downstairs and heating downstairs not that hot. Bathrooms are a bit dated

The property was beautifully kept and was very clean! Ramesh was very helpful and kind and tended to all our needs. His cooking was exquisite and I would definitely recommend people to stay here if you are travelling as a group :)
