Howzit Hostels Hawaii

Not much. Probably expected as this was the "affordable" option. Oh, there was coffee for breakfast.

The hostel has rules that are just not being enforced. People were being very loud during "quiet hours", including the person who was at the reception. Very annoying. The kitchen had so many cockroaches it was a bit of a nightmare. They looked at you from the shelf, inside the cutlery drawer... Very hygienic. The fridge had plenty of expired food too, so not even the fridge felt safe in that kitchen. The windows in the room are old and sometimes don't stay open. They leave gaps when "closed" too, so prepare to welcome a few mosquitoes into your room. There is also a big gap underneath the door, so plenty of light comes in.

I haven't stayed in a hostel for years. This place exceeded my (admittedly very low) expectations about hostels. The toilet was well maintained and nice-smelling. The individual beds were simple, but surprisingly comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised that breakfast was provided, and that there was a nice central space to eat, read, and hang out at. There is also a WhatsApp group that organizes events and trips around the island, which would have been great if you have more time here in Hilo. The hostel is also within walking distance of the beachfront - which means you can actually pop out to see the sunrise; it's also within easy walking distance of many grocery stores and eating places, which I really appreciated. Location was great, especially if you don't drive!
