"Fire Alarm Chaos and No Heating – A Disappointing Winter Stay"

2.0

There are many things we really liked about the hostel. The staff were incredibly friendly and always keen to help. We truly loved the fireplace in the sitting room — it created such a warm and cosy atmosphere. One of the ladies regularly came in to top up the wood every 20 minutes to keep the room warm, which we really appreciated. The sitting room was much warmer than our bedroom. We loved almost everything about this place; at times it didn’t even feel like a hostel because everything was so clean and tidy. You can clearly see that the hostel is run with a lot of care and love, and the kitchen is top-notch. It’s just a shame about the heating and fire alarm issues. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any sleep, as I kept anticipating the alarm going off again, and the cold only made things much worse.

My stay at Rock Hostel was a very disappointing experience, especially given that it was during winter. The biggest concern was the fire alarm, which went off three times during our stay. We were informed that there was a fault in the fire alarm system, which made the situation even more worrying. When the alarm went off, it was unclear whether we should evacuate or wait for it to be switched off. On one occasion, around 9:00 pm, we were told there was no need to escape, despite the alarm sounding. This caused confusion and concern about safety, as guests were left unsure how seriously to take the alarms. Later that night, the fire alarm went off twice more — once at around 11:00 pm and again at 3:39 am. As a hiker, getting proper rest is essential, and this completely disrupted my sleep. The heating was another major issue. Although it appeared to be working earlier in the evening, it had been switched off when I returned to my room at around 10:00 pm. The room was freezing. My face and nose were extremely cold throughout the night. The hostel provides hot water bottles, and I had three in my bed, yet I was still very cold — which shows how inadequate the heating was. On a positive note, the hostel is clean and well equipped. However, it is clearly not prepared to host guests during winter conditions. Between the unreliable heating and the repeated fire alarm incidents, it made for an uncomfortable and concerning stay. Unless these issues are properly resolved, I would not recommend staying here during the colder months.
