Amphitheatre Backpackers Lodge

The view was awesome. We woke up with a lake view. We did a guided tour to Tugela Falls, which was amazing! Thank you Muzi for taking us there and guiding us safely through the Drakensberge.

The staff was not really welcoming and gave us contradictory information. They gave us a room we didn’t book which was way smaller then the booked one. When we mentioned that they said at first the room we booked is not available and when suddenly it was available, we must pay extra for the room. After some discussion we got the room. There is a lot of mosquitoes but no protection at all. The food was okay but the music at the bar so loud we couldn‘t communicate properly. Outside there wasn‘t proper lighting. All in all we didn’t feel comfortable and we left after 2 nights even though we had booked 3.

Establishment lacks hands-on management. The one communal kitchen ran out of gas on Christmas Eve & the shop wasn't open or even set up.

We liked the pool and the area to chill around it. And there is a large field area to play games or sit and relax. Good location if you are visiting the Royal Natal Park.

We have visited this place many times over the last 16 years and unfortunately it is just going downhill. It used to be a fun lively place but not any more. The reception staff are bored out of their mind just sitting on her phone all day (some other staff were really helpful when asked to rectify things). We got into our room and it was really dirty. Had to give everything a sweep before bringing our stuff in. The communal kitchen was pretty grubby and not very well stocked. The bathrooms were all full of mozzies except for the one in the bar so we just walked over and used that one. There was no hand soap in any bathroom including the ones for the bar and restaurant. Not sure what visitors did who were just there for food or drinks. The toilet paper run out one morning, I told the cleaning lady and 24 hours later it still hadn't been replaced. This is the worst score I've ever given for accommodation. It certainly isn't the worst I've ever stayed but we were charged 35 euros per night for a tiny, dirty, fly infested chamber. If it was 15 a night that would be reasonable and you would happily put up.with the negatives. But not for that price! The place has a general air of being run down, everything is a bit broken (bits of roof broken, leaking taps etc) and shabby and everyone has just given up. It's a shame because it used to be such a good spot to stay. We will definitely not be coming back.

The fact they clearly are closing down and nothing communicated even though you book (still at full price) on presumption all the services their website and booking.com state. Hardly any thing to order from the bar, braai facilities area is really run down as all the common areas, Sad as this place always used to be in good condition. I feel it is being deceitful to not inform you once you have booked the condition and most services are unavailable

Enjoyed the tranquility and remoteness. Very close to Royal Natal if you are interested in hiking, great pool and places to chill.

I liked that it was clean and private. Its very convenient if you need a quick stay of if you have a family outing or on a road trip.

The place isn't good if you are looking for a luxurious or romantic suit with a spouse. I also didnt like the bathroom facilities because they are rigid and bare. Personally, the price of the stay doesn't match the overall experience
