Colonial Surfing Villa Hostel & Home Stay

We initially had a reservation for 10 days and ended up staying a month. The family is lovely, they share everything they have and try to help you in every way possible. We had all the privacy we wanted and at the same time we were able to include ourselves in all the activities they did, sharing meals, celebrations... If you prefer your space, they are respectful and not noisy (even with 2 children and 2 pets!) With the included breakfast we tried a large number of typical dishes! and we were always able to have them when we returned from surfing (or whenever we want) We share the kitchen with them, there are enough utensils and a good pan. We also rent a motorcycle with them, at a fair price.

The accommodation is close to the road and is surprisingly busy for such a small road almost all day, noise start early. For us, as we woke up early for surfing and no-napping was not a big problem, but it is something to keep in mind if you are looking for something really quiet.

Renuk and his family are so welcoming and made my stay in Sri Lanka for a week so enjoyable. I appreciate everything they did for me. They always went out of their way to make sure everything was great. A few days during my stay I joined them for market shopping in Ahangama and Wellinggama and also had lunch at their place instead of having to walk. Renuk was always there to take me surfing in his Tuk Tuk in the morning. You ask to get fresh coconuts and bananas and water and food and anything else you may need. It’s like coming home to your Sri Lankan family each day and for me that was perfect! Note that the place is basic but has everything you need and the family and company makes up for the things.

Nothing - this is definitely one place I want to come back to in the future - maybe even next year!

We came here based on reviews. Unfortunately we left a night early due to the property being not quite as sold on booking.com. The room was dark, the walls were Moldy/damp. The bathroom was strange. Connected to the families kitchen with a wall between but with an open roof so you could hear the family whilst trying to…. You know. Which made us feel a little uncomfortable.

Easy and comfy room with everything what’s necessary: bed, desk, fan and mosquito net. The hosts were fantastic! Comforting and supportive! Thank you so much 🫶

Big clean room with fan and private bathroom. Basic but good enough for the really cheap price !!! Nice little breakfast in the morning, host will help you with whatever you need, he also as a tuk tuk if you need and do fair price as well :) Perfect location if you are a surfer, with great surf spots and also restaurants nearby. It's on the main road so it gets busy and noisy during the day but very quiet at night !!! And most of the time you will probably be at the beach so who cares ? :)

The hostfamily is super friendly, kind and helpful! The garden has lots of flowers and trees providing natural shade and a nice atmosphere very well enjoyable in the given hammock. Plus - breakfast is included and you are a 1 minute walk away from the beautiful Wild beach. Would definitely go here again :)

I stayed for two weeks with Renuk and the family at Colonial and it has been nothing less than exceptional! These are the nicest and coolest people ever, we went together to the market for shopping, had dinner, went to a temple on full moon day and had lots of laughter together. Breakfast was good, plenty and different every day. The room is basic, but good and has a direct access through the garden. Lazy Right’s (2 minutes), Lazy Left’s (3 minutes) and Devil’s Island (5 minutes) surf spots are all in walking distance. Across the street is a stone wall from where all three spots can be seen. The house is right by the street, traffic noise was okay though. I found it nice to be a bit away and just in between the hassle of Ahangama and Midigama downtown.

I have stayed in this very nice homestay for 2 weeks. I had a clean private room for a very honest price, just in front of the beach. The family is lovely and helpful every each one of them. Spent amazing time with them having delicious dinners and spending Christmas together. Highly recommended! See you soon guys!
