"Feels like the original if rustic paradise"

9.0

While at Bolita, I expected Adam and Eve to step forward from behind a tree any time as it truly was paradise! The hostel allows you to stay in the middle of the jungle - in the buff, if you dare! - and to explore the jungle on your own on the property's expansive private trail system. The trails are really well maintained (unless there was a recent tree fall, in which case you may have to find a way around) and very well sign-posted - it's impossible to get lost. With 15 km in total and multiple loops, you would need at least 2-3 days to explore all of them leisurely. The hostel itself is rustic and shows its age yet still comfortable. The showers and toilets are excellent and the kitchen is fully functional with running water and multiple gas stoves; the staff maintained them meticulously clean. The hostel provides rubber boots in many sizes in case paths become muddy during the rainy season. The mattresses were good, the linen fresh and modern, and the mosquito net worked perfectly (and anyhow I barely saw any mosquito). I rarely felt that submerged in nature - and given how hot and humid the jungle is, it felt really liberating to be able to take one's clothes off...

I had no complaints. However, while the property does provide information prior to the stay, there could be more information up front, especially for guests who don't camp or stay in off-grit huts regularly. Here are a couple of things future guests may want to be aware of: - When hiking to or from Bolita, you need to wade through a river that depending on the recent amount of rain may be 15-30cm deep. Unless you are used to walking barefoot through a river bed, you definitely want to pack either large rubber boots or plastic shoes such as crocs. (There also seems to be a backup route entailing a longer hike but you would need to inquire how to get there.) - The area is hilly and a walking stick may be handy. There is a small chance you encounter a snake, although the hostel assures that it never has recorded any bite. In general, wearing boots that cover your ankles is said to greatly reduce your chances of actually being bitten if you accidentally step on or scare a snake, so you may want to pack a pair - and use the walking stick to warn animals if you need to step on a pile of leaves. - To charge your phone, you need a USB-A style cable - you cannot plug in your own charger or use USB-C. You therefore also cannot charge electric tooth brushes and other small appliances that require their own adapter. - Part of the living area has a dirt floor (no tiles or concrete); sandals therefore are highly recommended. - Bring your own shampoo/shower gel and possibly kitchen towels if you need them (toilet paper, towel, bed linen, and dish washing detergent are provided; you may want to bring a fresh sponge for washing up as the shared one isn't replaced frequently). - To prevent (biting) ants from frequenting the kitchen, it is paramount that trash (which is separated for recycling) is washed before binning. You hence may want to avoid packaging that would be a hassle to clean or hard to recycle - plastic tubs, cans, cartons and glasses are generally fine.

I had one of the best experiences of my life, it's a very, very special place. The staff is very kind the bed kitchen toilet everywhere is spotlessly clean, in the middle of the rainforest!

"Great hiking in a remote hostel. For a first time solo traveler, this was unique and full of adventure."

10.0

Bolita is an amazing place. First off, the trails are worth the trip if you like to hike. In my experience it is rare to find great trails that you don’t need a guide to hike in OSA. I stayed in a small room and the set up was comfortable considering how far up in the jungle I was. The staff was friendly and cooking and bathing facilities were solid. A great deck above the cooking area was great for yoga or just taking a break during the afternoon heat. This place is natural or clothing-optional so be prepared. I was there twice over a month period, one time there was a fair amount of nudity, the next not at all. Really depends on who is there. Can’t recommend enough if you want remote with great hiking.

"Outstanding wildlife in paradise with great accommodation ."

Bolita is an absolute slice of paradise !!! Ron the owner and the staff are friendly, helpful and really want you to be as comfortable as possible. If you want to see wildlife , then this is the place to visit. The well signed trails are great some leading to waterfalls and to unbelievable views over breathtaking landscapes. The rooms are simple but effective in immersing you into nature.

"A unique jungle experience"

9.0

Bolita is a really cool and unique place to stay. I loved the gorgeous location right in the forest and the many beautiful trails, swimming holes, waterfalls, plants, and views on the property. The hostel owners, volunteers, and guests were friendly, interesting, and relaxed, and there is thought put into maintaining a polite and ethical presence between hostel goers and locals. There are hammocks and spaces to do yoga and hang out, and the bugnets around the beds were great!

You should be aware going in that you are almost entirely outdoors and exposed to bugs, rain, and humidity. Naturally, the beds and furnishings and whatnot are a bit dirty. The wifi worked for sending messages but not a lot else. The hike up is not for the faint of heart! Still a great place to stay but it's not an experience for everyone!
