The 8th Maine Regiment Lodge and Museum

The Lodge is a very special place. We loved the unique history and approach. There is a lot on communal space and activity, including the bathrooms. We can see that this would not be for everyone, but we loved the simplicity and natural ability to meet the staff and other guests. The views are spectacular, the location is amazing and the building and amenities (best outdoor shower and morning reading on the deck with hot coffee) are very authentic. We met great people and enjoyed feeling enveloped by the special love people have for Peaks Island.

The installations are basic - bathrooms, guest rooms, beds, dining area - all very simple. But what the place lacks in luxury it makes up for in character and authenticity.

It was a wonderful experience that a hotel could never give you. Sitting on the porch at night having a drink with some of the other guest and listening to the surf hitting the rock was very relaxing. We plan on returning for a longer stay.

This is NOT a negative on the property or its staff, The property is located on an island which is only reachable by ferry. Since we came from out of state we ferried the rental car to the island. Parking on the island is limited, not impossible but I think that there were better option that we were not aware of before the trip. There is parking at the dock in Portland and there are golf cart and bicycle rentals right at the dock on the island. We will explore this option for our next visit.

Not knowing what to expect other than the website, we enjoy unique experiences and we were not disappointed. My only regret is that we couldn’t stay longer. Our hosts were very accommodating and a pleasure to be around.

Bring own food or other outlets on the island. I liked the uniqueness of the facility and enjoyed the museum. Staff very warm , caring and knowledgeable. Took great concern for us especially my husband who had difficulty with the stairs. Scenery wonderful. Great experience and the care and dedication to the facility was exceptional.

My husband found it difficult to adjust to lack of media/ paper and news even if it was only for a day.

This place is SPECIAL. So unique and like nowhere I’ve ever stayed. That’s exactly why I picked it. Originally a respite for soldiers during the civil war, descendants of soldiers still run the place…. Which is full of old quirky charm such as a kitchen stocked with mix-and-match vintage china, a seaglass collection, and giant fireplace. The rooms are simple but so charming with antique furniture and quilts. I enjoyed chatting with the Innskeeper William who also oozes charm and is full of stories, and enjoyed some wine with other travelers on the giant porch with unspoiled ocean/cliff views. A 5-minute walk to town. This is only for those who appreciate and crave an authentic experience. A Marriott it is not.

FANTASTIC FIND. If you prefer the plusher, pampered experience in a stay, you should likely find someplace else. BUT. If you enjoy hearty character, a warm community environment, and the simpler things -- LOOK NO FURTHER. I was quite impressed with all this place has to offer and very sad I wasn't staying more than a night. 8th Maine Regiment offers breathtaking views, tradition, and even an outdoor shower (AND a claw foot tub in the ladies bathroom!) I am already planning a visit centered around this lodge for next year.

The shower in the ladies bathroom was a little cramped, as well as the toilet stalls. (But they're working with limited space while trying to keep with the original features of the building, so that's not surprising or even upsetting to me).
