Decor of the property was good and matched the photos Chettinad clearly has a very unusual history resulting in the mansions/palaces built in 19thC and first half of 20thC for extended families whose livelihood faltered when India became independent. Most appear in disrepair but some are now restored as tourist accommodation and are definitely worth visiting or staying in one. Fascinating to view and learn the history. Staff very friendly and arranged car/driver for us. Briefly we enjoyed many temples (especially Kundrakudi Murugan, Pilliyarpatti Vinayagar, Kuberan). Athangudi Palace was really interesting. We regretted visiting Karaikudi as little of interest. The fort and two small temples at Thumayam were interesting.

Overall disappointed with a) Cleaniness especially bathroom. Shower positioned almost over toilet and water run off taking over 12 hours to evaporate meant we had only one shower despite staying 3 nights with daytime temps in 35C+. b) smell of drains. c) bed creaky. result poor sleep. d) no safe in bedroom. e) location neighbourhood held no interest (compared to nearby Kanaducathan which pleasant to stroll in). Food choice limited. We spent three nights but felt we could have covered in a day or two less. Over priced / poor value for money.

We absolutely loved our stay at this beautifully restored heritage property. The way the building has been brought back to life is simple yet so thoughtfully done — it still holds its old-world charm while feeling warm and welcoming. The food was honestly one of the highlights for us. Every dish was delicious, full of flavor, and made with care. I enjoyed every bite and genuinely wished I could have more. The staffs were kind, attentive, and always ready to help with a smile. Their warmth made us feel comfortable and well taken care of throughout our stay. The ambience of the place is calm and peaceful — the kind of space where you can truly relax and slow down. Overall, it was a memorable experience for us, and we’re already looking forward to coming back again. 💛
