Minshuku Chatamago

Proprietor was very friendly and polite. Loved the location, on the slope of a mountain, with some nice views when travelling to and from the property. Close to a local tram spot. A slender, pleasant, wrap-around garden and external doorway for the room gave a really pleasant atmosphere. Room had tatami flooring, a small dresser, low table with chair, desk with chair, and two futons. Air con included and worked nicely. Bright and pleasant place to be in. Easily enough space for two travellers. Each room has door with individual locks. Check-in and out were low effort. Kitchen was well stocked.

Some walls are a little thin, but other guests were very considerate, and there is a shared space for cooking and relaxation/conversation.

The property is a typical Japanese house and the owner is very kind. If you stay here you will experience how is to live like in local house. The communal areas are spacious. There are many hidden shrines nearby the property and you will enjoy a great view of the city if you visit them. The property is at the top of a hill so you will work out your legs to come and go and breath pure air

It's close to Suwa temple electric car station - which helps a lot to get the places you want.

Tô get a dark environment inside room 305 I needed to turn off the lights from outside (it's sound weird but I needed to do that to be able to sleep).

I liked the atmosphere of the place. It was quiet, and the (western) bed was comfortable with good, heavy blankets. The pillows felt like they were stuffed with hard beads, but I slept fine with them. The kitchen had plenty of dishware and amenities to use, including a microwave, tea kettle, hot water machine, stove, refrigerator, TV, etc., and was spacious with a table and then a smaller round table nearby. It reminded me of my grandfather's house back in the states. There's also a lot of racks outside for doing laundry, and part of the pleasure of waking up further from all the attractions was the calm scene of weak early sunlight frosting the plants outside in the morning.

This was my first visit to Nagasaki, so part of my review carries the bias of not knowing fully what to expect, as a disclaimer. I didn't realize how far of a walk this inn was from some of the sites I wanted to see. Though the street car stop 10-15 minutes away near the Suwa Shrine helped elevate that, the walk to it is up/downhill from the hotel. For some reason I thought it was going to be like a western hotel based on the description of a double bed room, but it wasn't, in that there was a shared bathroom and shower room. Admittedly, this is something I personally need to get more used to as a foreigner traveling around Asia, but I think it may be helpful to let others know if they are like me and also don't know what to expect. It was also pretty cold initially, as the window in the room had been open, but I was able to heat the space up to be more comfortable with the heater. I'm not sure why, but it seems windows and screens in the hall were also left open, which made it cold on the way to the bathroom. I think those are my only cons, and most are my own lack of perception: distance, the walk up and down the hill from the streetcar spot, and the chilliness.

Great stay at a great place in Nagasaki. Just a tram ride away from all the tourist attractions. Lovely informal atmosphere.
