Water Front Home Stay and Resort

I choose homestays to experience local culture and connect with families, but here I experienced the exact opposite. The owner never introduced me to his family, I had to introduce myself to his wife. Overall, his attitude lacked transparency and seemed driven purely by money. He tried to sell me excursions at inflated prices, claiming the guide was “highly sought-after.” He then put me in an uncomfortable situation with this guide, to the point that I decided to organize a tour on my own. I quickly found another tour through another hotel at a fair price, without any issues. The most serious issue was lying: breakfast was never prepared on either of the two days. The excuse was that, due to the cyclone, there was no “hygienic food available,” while he was eating every day with his family and hosting people at home, and hiding behind this terrible excuse because his wife was busy and he probably didn’t want to cook. In Sri Lanka, even very simple accommodations are offering generous breakfasts, I am traveling 1 month around after cyclone and this explanation was clearly a lie and completely unacceptable!!! You CANNOT use such a bad happening to hide yourself. Karma will teach this man he should not behave this way. Other promises were not kept: he said he would heat up my dinner (which I had bought myself) for breakfast, as I tried to be practical, but he did not do it until I reminded him. He also said he would take me to Sigiriya, but instead took someone else. The room itself is nice, but there is no privacy: the rooms open onto the entrance, and there are always his friends coming in and out. You always have to keep the curtains closed so it’s basically a bunker. However, the real problem is not the house, but the owner’s behavior — greedy and disrespectful toward tourists and using a terrible happening, the cyclone, to justify himself.

I do not recommend spending money at this homestay, I visited others in the city and there are so many better options with super kind hosts. Hospitality is not about appearances; it is about honesty, care, and consistency — all of which were missing here. I really had a hard time being treated like this with no reason.

Clean rooms, AC (necessary in Anuradhnapura because of high temperatures), good bed, mosquito net (I did not use it). Good restaurant with nice vibe and very nice food at 800 meters. (Palhena). Small supermarket at 300 meters. Mr Wassa arranged a safary to Willpattu for me and found another traveller to share costs; we had a very good day (2 times leopard, bear, barking deer, several large birds including an eagle and a hornbill, loads of water birds and some crocodiles). Mr. Wassa also arranged a guide for me, mr Lalith, who is very knowledgeable about the history of Anuradhnapura (much more so than most other tourist guides, so if you are a history nerd, choose hum).Note that the lake is not visible from the accommodation.

This is Sri Lanka, and the accommodation is a ground floor building, meaning that sometimes you encounter some animals in your room. Not a big problem, but adjust your expectations. The AC was a bit loud.

We hebben erg genoten van ons verblijf in deze mooie home stay. De kamer is erg schoon en comfortabel en de locatie is erg goed. Het is leuk dat je dichtbij het meer zit, want je kunt hier makkelijk een rondje omheen lopen. Zo zie je veel natuur en zie je bovendien hoe mensen werken en leven in de stad. Wat ons het meest beviel is de gastvrijheid van de eigenaren. Ze doen er alles aan om je op je gemak te voelen. Wasantha is een slimme man die je veel kan vertellen over de mooie kanten van Sri Lanka, maar ook over het minder mooie verleden van het land. Het is waardevol om hier ook iets over te leren. Wij konden dit erg waarderen. We raden iedereen aan om te dineren en ontbijten bij dit verblijf. De Sri Lankaanse gerechten waren heerlijk, bovendien voor een goede prijs. Wij raden iedereen aan om hier te verblijven!

We loved the stay at the Water front home stay! Spacious room, comfy bed, very clean, and super helpful staff. The location is 15min with the tuktuk from the historic centre and 30min from Mihintale temple. The home stay is family run and you can feel that from the service they offer. We got advice for the rest of our trip, they washed our clothes, we got to learn some Sinhala from the family (the wife of the owner is a teacher) and even a mini lesson on starting the Tuktuk engine ! The food was also really tasty and they had great coffee and tea (which is not always the case)! We got every day offered different local delicacies as breakfast and everything was homemade to perfection. We highly recommend this place!

Els amfitrions són molt amables. El senyor és guia turístic i t informa de tot el que necessitis. El lloc és molt tranquil, sense sorolls i està molt net.
