MACHIYADO 京都南禅寺道

The property is uncomfortably cold down stairs and the only bathroom is outside.. you have to go out into the cold to take a shower and the bathroom is not heated. There is no window blind or cover in front of the bedroom windows, lights from neighbouring house shine into the bedroom at night. All the air-conditioning split units are mounted right outside the main bedroom window, it is noisy and it makes the windows rattle. We had to switch the units off to get some sleep. It’s important to let potential clients know important things like the bathroom being outside.

It’s a beautifully converted machiya - the amenities were plentiful and while you have to see yourself in and out, the owner is very responsive and helpful if you reach out. Location is excellent - very close to the Nanenji and in an area more relaxed than the busy Gion center.

the only thing was that if you are not used to this king of accommodation then the noises from outside or the neighboring houses may come as a surprise but we knew this would be the case and we did not mind. It was not that noisy and we slept well, our 4 year-old included.

Beautifully renovated home, nice to experience traditional Japanese style, relaxing and quiet, really comfortable beds for a great night’s sleep

The location isn’t around too many restaurants or traditional laneways but there is a train station about 10min walk away - google maps great to find your way around

The location was better than I expected. It is quite walkable and located in a quiet but still lively part of the city. It was a nice walk to Nanzenji and Gion. The guesthouse was clean as well. We had a very comfortable stay.
