The George Flat

Very spacious and relaxed. The WiFi and air con were brilliant

Check in procedure a little bit complicated but it's a minor criticism

It is a wonderful apartment situated in the eastern section of the city. Close to Belem and other attractions.

My only complaint was a bit of street noise. There’s a bar down the street where a few rowdy customers were drinking.

A really good location, near the centre but not right in it. I found the neighbourhood to be full of good little bars and shops. The apartment is really spacious, so much bigger than the pictures make it look. Its basically 2 flats. The balcony was excellent to take in the evening or morning sun. A short walk to the train station to get the train to Sintra and beyond. The flat was bright and airy.

The stairs to the top bedroom are challenging and not for the faint hearted. Perhaps a hand rail would make it seem less dicey.

The stairs leading up to one of the bedrooms felt a bit unsafe. They were very steep and had no bannister. The top step had an uneven level.

Well situated in a quarter where a majority of local people still live : no crowds of noisy visitors and despite some new buildings an authentic feel about it. For breakfast head for The Boulangerie or the Art Museum (if you find the right entrance you don't pay an entrance fee). Try croissants at the first, that also does a handsome English style breakfast - very filling- and fresh mango and papaya at the second, but open from about 9h30 am.

Flat : traditional narrow door entrance, take off your big rucksack first to get in sideways! Staircase light should go on automatically but doesn't until you reach your floor, therefore a little late. Be careful of the last steps when leaving should the lights go out just then : there are two steps to take not one. Inside the flat everything is fine. We didn't do any cooking but everything is there for 4 (we were just 2), we didn't need the air conditioning either, nor use the TV...but everything is there for a rainy day. Two minor matters for the owner to look at : the door to one shower room can't be closed completely and in the bedroom some of the flooring nails are sitting a little proud (could scratch your feet or hole your socks!). Neither of these spoiled our stay and we would be happy to go back to the George.

The location was convenient and quiet. You can easily take a bus almost in front of the flat or walk to the more touristy areas. Lovely balcony to have a relaxing drink. Lovely restaurants -especially Geographia and Come Prima- in the area and affordable cafeterias. Air conditioning was a big plus.

There was a damp smell in the apartment every time we came in. Something from the sewers maybe? Luckily it cleared out quickly after opening the balcony doors. If someone big/robust person is choosing the flat, they might have difficulties with the front door because it is really narrow even for a normal-sized person. Second apartment unit has a loft, but there was no railing at the stairs. We found the loft too dangerous to climb with tired feet. There's not a big supermarket in the neighborhood for the groceries so you need to go further.
