Papavero Accademia Carrara

The apartment is in a great spot, just by the Academia Carrara and a 15 minute walk up the hill to the Citta Alta. There is a Carrefour Express just 5 mins walk away. The apartment was a decent price for 5 people. The place was clean and there were plenty of nice white towels (although no tea towel for the kitchen). Beds were made up when we arrived (including the sofa bed in the kitchen which we appreciated) and the bed linen was nice. To gain entry the owner provides you with a phone number which opens the front door, so arriving late at night was not a problem.

The layout of the apartment is unusual - the first bedroom is off the kitchen/living room, and to get to the second bedroom and bathroom you have to go through the first bedroom, up some stairs and through a doorway (with no door) so you just need to be aware that there is not too much privacy for a group of people. The kitchen could use an upgrade - unfortunately the coffee machine (for which coffee pods were kindly provided) did not work. Not the end of the world since we were able to make coffee in the coffee pot on the gas hob, but a bit disappointing. The plug for the coffee machine was right behind the sink which felt a bit dangerous. The main problem, however, was that the gas hob smelt quite gassy and the only way we could stop the smell was by turning off the gas valve under the sink. This was rather alarming, and I would recommend that the gas stove be fixed and/or replaced with a small plug-in induction hob perhaps. Another plug in that area would be useful too, to be able to plug in the microwave without wheeling it over to the plug by the sofa. All in all we enjoyed our stay but there were a few hurdles to overcome. It would have been good value for money if it were not for the problems that were verging on dangerous. If these were fixed then I would recommend it as a decent, quirky place to stay if you're on a budget.
