Portugal here I Come - Alfama-Castelo

Great location, Perfect size for a small family.

There needs to be a fan! It got very hot and we woke up a LOT in a sweat.

This little apartment is uniquely located within the grounds of St Georges Castle, as such you can hear the Peacocks at night (although not enough to disturb your sleep) I recommend you take advantage of this location so you can beat the crowds and be first in line to visit the nearby castle itself one morning. Interaction with the host(s) was smooth, professional and informative. Top marks for communication. Very pleasant little café right on the doorstep. Door lock system is very modern and secure considering how old the property is. Walking through St Georges Castle Gate every night to get back to the apartment meant we were treated to the scent of the orange blossom trees regularly.

No common greeting items like tea/coffee or a cheap bottle of wine in the fridge as a welcome. Nothing to greet us apart from some dishsoap, toilet roll and table salt. I would have appreciated simply enough coffee for the next morning, They were generous with the toilet roll at least. I'm not the thinnest person but I'm not huge either, yet even so the bathroom is a very tight squeeze Very few power sockets in the apartment, and none conveniently placed. We ended up charging our phones in the kitchen most nights, sharing a plug with the kettle. We had a power cut on the last morning due to a blown fuse. Simply running the heater and the kettle at the same time can be enough to blow the fuse. The welcome booklet does include details on where the fuse board is however. We stayed in early March, as such the weather was cooler. I strongly suspect this apartment becomes very hot and humid in summer, but off-season it is fine. On reflection I would advise only staying one or two nights at this location, not 5 nights as we did, not least because St Georges is at the top of a hill. Bear in mind that due to the unique location of this apartment your front door opens directly onto a narrow street that is busy with tourists visiting the Castle area during the day. At night everything close by shuts down as the Castle is not open ~6pm+ so after this time the area becomes very quiet.

Amazing location. Can't beat it. Cristina was lovely & easy to talk to. Simple check in process. Easy to get to the castle when it opens before it got too busy :) . Would absolutely recommend.

Bed was pretty lumpy & uncomfortable.

We were not provided enough toiletpaper and there was only one trash bag for a 4 nights stay. There are peacocks nearby that start screaming at night so sleep was difficult.
