The School House

Overall, it was a nice stay. The School House is centrally located just over the bridge in Fossgate. The apartment looks out over a courtyard, so it is also very quiet here. We had a little trouble finding the keysafe and apartment when we arrived, but we phoned Stays York and Emily (?) was absolutely fantastic and helped us out in no time. When checking in, definitely use the side door, not the front door like we did. It is a spacious apartment with a bath and a separate toilet/shower room. There is a very small closet for hanging your clothes (not many hangers though, but I always bring my own) as well as an iron/ironing board and a hairdryer. The kitchen seemed pretty well equipped, but we didn't use it. There is also a TV and vinyl player with vinyls if you want to play music. There is also a selection books/dvds. For us, the bed wasn't comfortable at all, so we didn't sleep well during our stay. For the price you pay, the mattress needs replacing as it offers no support and sags in the middle. Two of us stayed here, and we were only given three pillows, so one of us had to use a cushion off the sofa. Due to the age of the building, the ceiling in the bedroom area is low, and there is also a spiral staircase up to the mezzanine level, which may not be to everyone's tastes. The staircase also juts out into the bathroom area, so you have to watch your head, but this is just a design feature. There is also a fan which we were very grateful for as on the last night we woke up to a reading of 28 on the thermostat which neither of us changed - it took several hours for the temperature to return to a comfortable level. I think all things considered the price point is a little high compared to other places we stayed in York. If the mattress and pillows were of better quality, then it would have met my expectations. This aspect really let's the place down.

There are a few things that need some attention. - The sink in the shower room is very slow draining (could be due to the age of the building?) - There is a spare duvet in the closet, but it's just in a crumpled heap on the floor. It would be nicer if this was stored in a duvet bag, so it would be clean if guests wanted to use it. - The staircase up to the mezzanine level is a little loose - A new mattress is needed, and you need to supply enough pillows for two guests (two each and not three) - The heating is very temperamental. We woke up one evening and it was boiling. We were thankful for the fan. - All the radiators should have numerical dials like the one by the front door. This would make it easier for guests to control the temperature and not have to use the white thermostat box. - A 10am checkout is too early, especially on the weekend.

Couldn’t fault the location Spacious

Definitely not worth the price that is charged - the extras that you expect from something at that price didn’t exist (got more in my recent stay at a travelodge for a fraction of the price) for example no shower gel, a couple of sachets of long life milk for two people for two nights. Booked an apartment to be able to use it and not be out all of the time but arrived and the tv remote was broken so couldn’t watch tv, a helpful person did reply to my message to say they would bring a new one the following day which wasn’t much use for us as we had a day out planned that day but someone did come with a new remote who had no idea how to set it up so eventually told them to leave it. Blinds in bedroom also kept falling down which meant we were woke up as soon as the sun came up Only one Prosecco glass The code provided for the side gate didn’t work so had to use the main entrance

Such a quirky place but fabulous. I love spiral staircases. The bath was lovely, the furnishings comfortable, a welcome pack was very handy. A spacious and well set out apartment. Everything you could need. Byo Shampoo, conditioner & bodywash though. There is a store walking distance and also a multi-storey carpark nearby. Plenty of restaurants, lovely shops, city centre has so much character. Absolutely loved this place.

This Stay was in a great location for discovering York. Cleaned to perfection. Very spacious and comfortable. Just note that there is a spiral staircase to the bed if that could be a problem. The facilities are excellent. Directions given to find the Stay made it easy to follow.

The property was in an excellent location just minutes walk from the Shambles. The property itself was clean, tidy and quiet. We were glad of the private garden area at the rear of the property as we could go out and get some air. The bed was amazing! It was so comfortable! We really liked the layout of the property, it was unique in its decor. The property was warm throughout our stay, we would highly recommend staying.
