JOIVY Modern Studio in New Town, on Historic George Street

Very nice location and the flat was beautiful inside. Nice, new kitchen and bathroom. Rental company was always able to quickly respond.

There was a lot of noise coming from the cocktail bar below that lasted until late at night. This made it impossible for us to sleep, even with earplugs and noise cancelling headphones. The door of the flat next door was loud and, since the bed is beside the door, we also experienced a lot of noise from neighbors entering and leaving. The building itself is not really well taken care of. Also, there were too many upselling communications from the rental company (“book your JOIVY transfer” and “discount code for luggage storage”) that felt too pushy. Finally, there is a large window in the living room/bedroom that doesn’t have a shade, so the room was already fully lit at 6:30am.

I'll start with the positive: --The apartment / unit is clean, appealing, and an attractive place to stay. --It is in the perfect part of town for exploration. --We had difficulty getting our keys when we arrived, but the Joivy customer service people were very helpful (by telephone during arrival) -- but sadly not helpful at all after leaving. Now for the negative. The evening noise here is mind-numbing. Quite Literally. The unit sits above a nightclub / restaurant / pub-- the Alchemist. The music from just before 8pm until midnight is a pounding beat (they have a live DJ). We're talking hurts your head and your heart pounding loud. Bottom line: There is no sleeping until after midnight. (This unit would be perfect for young people who stay out until midnight. But we are seniors, and wish to find sleep at 8 pm.) And there is no way to block the sound. And there is nothing on the reservation that prepared us for this. Nothing. We wanted to cancel after the first night, but had already paid for three. Bottom line, we would not have booked this unit. We have traveled all over the world, and stayed in many large cities, in units where noise (traffic, city sounds) are real. But this is a first. I do not know what our recourse is, but it was by far, a most emotionally disruptive stay, and put a significant damper on our vacation. And the money we spent for lodging was sadly, completely wasted.

The location is good, and the apartment was large and well maintained in the room.

The service - I wasn’t told which room I had been given, the keys to the room had no room number on them. None of the automated emails from the provider contained a room number. When I called the service desk to find out my room number, I was told “room 1” yet the property had rooms 1a and 1b. I had to ring the service staff a second time to find d out my room number. “1b”was the response I was given. I spent a while trying to get the room keys to work, and couldn’t, so I had to ring the staff again. I was then told I was in room “2b” so I had been trying the wrong door on the wrong floor. Very frustrating. There is a loud bar in the basement of the building and the music can be heard and felt (bass from the speakers vibrating the walls and floor). The outer corridor had visible dirt stuck to the floor

Really enjoyed our stay! It was a beautiful apartment. Minor thing - No free to air tv available (assume there was no antenna) and you had to log into your own streaming service if you wanted to watch anything. The only real downside was having to pick up the key at a different property (key nest). It was pouring rain, with all our bags, the shop attendant (key nest) had a note he’ll be back in 5 mins (we waited for 25 mins) and then the code we were given was invalid! When we returned the key the (different) attendant was extremely rude! I would suggest changing key nest or using key safe at property.

The location was great. Everything we wanted to see and do was within a 15 min walking distance. The bed was really comfortable, heating system easy to use and kept the room warm. Great sized fridge and freezer as well as all the utensils you need. Really was a great base for our Christmas break.

The shower, I’m sorry to say, is useless! The most pressure you can get is a trickle which is just about enough to freshen up but forget it if you need to wash your hair. Other little niggles, but these really are just little things - a coat rack would be useful as there is not a huge about of hanging space in the wardrobe. The cushions and throws on the bed and sofa - need washing between guests. There is also no plug point near a mirror so just a bit tricky doing your hair.

the apartment is right next to a bar on the street so you can hear loud music till 1AM.
