一汁一菜の宿 ちゃぶダイニング Ichiju Issai no Yado Chabu Dining, A Private Farmstay in Rural Kyoto

Our family of four recently spent two nights on the beautiful rice paddy farm and had an incredibly pleasant and memorable experience. The peaceful landscape, surrounded by lush green fields, offered a refreshing break from Tokyo. We especially appreciated the chance to cook and share meals with our generous hosts, who made us feel like part of the family. Our children loved exploring the open space and watching the rhythms of farm life up close. The accommodations were simple, clean, and perfectly suited for a relaxing family stay. It was a meaningful and enriching experience that we will always remember.

Experiencing farm work and ascetic lifestyle With offering farm stays as business model, both, Nono and Akira, were very keen on demonstrating traditional simple lifestyle to their customers. Experience weeding rice paddies during farm work activity was fun and fascinating using traditional tool. Simple room with futon beds on tatami mats - nice view overlooking rice paddy Enjoyed Akira’s tour of property and taking us firefly watching in the evening Cooking experience with Nono was interesting and we learned about miso paste and rice. Lovely sitting around the fire place for shared meals. Both, Akira and Nono, took pictures throughout our stay and have sent them to us after.

We'd recommend a 1-2 nights stay - we stayed for 3 nights but cooking experience was quite repetitive. For breakfast and dinner, miso soup and rice as main dish with either vegetables or tofu as side dish. No option for fish, chicken etc. as food was set.  A) Lunch option: 2000 yen each or three hours of farm work for simple meal. B) No lunch included - only after three hours of farm work a simple lunch was offered.  No restaurants or supermarkets in walking distance If you like coffee: nice coffee shop is opened some days. Little privacy with shared bathroom. To enter you need to walk through living room. Bath times are until 9:30 pm. To summarise, we felt that the value offered did not quite justify the price, which we found to be on the higher end.

My stay at Chabi Dining was absolutely exceptional! The hosts not only provided us with outstanding service and delicious meals, but they also welcomed us into their own hundred-year-old traditional home, carefully preserving its historical charm and spirit. Their dedication to maintaining this unique property allows guests to experience a true journey through time, making the stay far more than just an ordinary visit. From the moment we arrived, we felt warmly welcomed and surrounded by incredible hospitality. The hosts are fantastic – their warmth, kindness, and meticulous attention to detail made us feel completely at home. The atmosphere is both elegant and cozy, while the interior is impeccably clean, adding to the overall comfort and relaxation. The culinary experience exceeded all our expectations. Every dish was a masterpiece – fresh ingredients, perfectly balanced flavors, and beautifully presented. The surrounding nature of Chabi Dining brings a deep sense of peace and relaxation. The beautiful, green landscapes create a tranquil setting, perfect for unwinding and escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life. All the local attractions and recommendations from the hosts were exactly as described and absolutely amazing. Every visit to these places added something special to our experience. Even the activities offered on-site were top-notch and perfectly suited to our interests. I would happily return to Chabi Dining! It’s a place where tradition meets warm hospitality, and where the combination of nature, outstanding cuisine, and an authentic atmosphere create an unforgettable experience. Highly recommended!

Not a lot of privacy

Absolutely everything. It is a place of magic. The breathtaking nature of Ayabe, beautiful farmland, and a traditional Japanese home that takes you back to another era all together; to a gentler pace, and the grateful knowledge of the hard work, and skill that goes into high quality ingredients and healthy eating. Forever grateful to Akira-san and Nono-san for inviting us into their home, sharing their experiences farming the land, and offering us some of the best meals we’ve had, not only while in Japan, but throughout decades of traveling the world. This kind, generous and wise couple made us feel so welcome. Around the hearth, enjoying food and conversation, we felt among friends. Deepest thanks and best wishes!

There wasn’t anything we didn’t like.

The stay in the farm was really fantastic! I recommend to spend 3 or 4 nights there, to enjoy the calm of the area and to try farming and cooking rice and miso soup . The hosts are very thoughtful and I enjoyed speaking with them about Japan and others things. We have also done the « Okudosan » activity, which I recommend. The women during the activity were very nice and we had a lot of fun.

Gets a little hot at night on a hot day

Beautiful traditional house with a central hearth to sit around for chatting and meals. There was an outdoor bath as well! The hosts Akira and wife No-No are warm and open introducing to us their clean organic dishes of home grown rice, miso soup and pickles. The walking tour they brought us around are beyond our expectations. There was matcha tea with traditional Japanese sweets as well as a healthy Bento picnic in a garden! Ayabe is peaceful and scenic with lovely locals keen to welcome you😃

We loved meeting the hosts - Nono-san and Akira-san. We enjoyed our conversations by the traditional Japanese fire place. Lots of care was put into the food we ate, from growing and harvesting it, to preparing it. We felt the connection between the hosts and the nature especially when they described the course of the ever-changing flavor of the miso they made and enjoyed. We came to this place and took a pause from our busy life. We immersed, reflected, and found a moment of inner peace. It is inspiring to see the different life choice the hosts made. Thank you Nono-san and Akira-san for the additional tour of your garden at the end of our stay. We also took inspiration from your food and started to make mixed grain rice and grilled tofu at home.

There is a house rule about bathing time because you are sharing the bathroom with the host, but it did not bother us as we came here for the immersive experience. The hosts also took very good care of us, they set the bath water ready at the temperature we wanted and provided us organic bathing ingredients - a natural rice grain bathing pouch.
