Kukummi Lodge - formerly Mackaya Bella Country Lodge

We feel so lucky to have found this piece of paradise. The view of Cathedral mountain is out of this world! Be sure to observe the alpenglow at sunrise. The Saturday Brai was the best dinner we’ve had during our entire trip in SA. The other meals were phenomenal as well. The hike to the waterfall that the hosts have created and maintained was a lot of fun and worth every step in the river. Daniel and Ryan made us feel at home and the staff members were each outstanding. We loved using the hot tub and stare at the mountains straight ahead. The road was totally doable with our Toyota Fortuner. The detailed info we received ahead of time was greatly appreciated.

It was a bit cold in the morning in the breakfast area. Definitely not a big deal and probably a plus in the hot season.

Everything was fantastic: the food, activities, hosts, accommodations, and environment... Ryan and Danny were awesome and very knowledgable hosts and the cooking staff were very talented and friendly. The hiking was unparalleled and the view from our rondavel was breath-taking. We had no reason to leave and immersed ourselves in the experience for several days of hiking, swimming and relaxing. If you enjoy hiking and aspire to hike the Central Drakensberg mountains, this is THE place to stay.

The road to the lodge was a little tricky during the rainy season (particularly if you are not experienced with off-road driving and 4x4 is recommended) but Ryan was very helpful and accommodating. Its totally worth it, though.

Kukummi is a wonderful lodge in an exceptional location. There are only three guest accommodations - each with its own rondavel. The atmosphere is therefore very personal, which I really liked, travelling on my own this time. Both hosts - Ryan and Danny - are super nice and make you feel like a friend from the moment you arrive. If you are interested, Ryan will be happy to tell you more about the place, the history of the lodge and the plans of the two owners. I was fascinated by his stories and couldn't stop asking more details (hope you didn't mind me bothering, Ryan... ;o) The staff is very attentive and eager to fulfill your every wish. Breakfast and dinner are very tasty. There is not much choice at dinner, but a fixed weekly menu, which is completely understandable given the small size of the hotel. I really enjoyed the meat dishes, but vegetarians also have no problem - Danny, the co-owner, is one himself. Various options were offered for breakfast. My personal favorite was the English breakfast prepared by Dombi - nothing was missing and it was excellently prepared... a dream! You have a wonderful view of the mountains and can go hiking from the lodge, but those who are not so adventurous can also enjoy this very special place in itself. My favorite spot for sunny days was in the meadow by the stream, where you can dip into the clear mountain water whenever it gets too warm. And: don't miss out the hot tub in the evening. It's such a great moment when you stretch out in the large, pleasantly temperate tub, with a cold beer or a glass of wine in your hand... I have every intention of coming back - preferably in September, when everything is in bloom.

Don't expect too much from the wifi at the moment. It works, but it's not really fast and sometimes drops out. Danny and Ryan are working on a technical solution so maybe it will improve soon.

I liked that this is a place to "de-phone" and get back to nature. It is a tranquil and peaceful place. The views and the sounds of nature are so calming. It really is a lovely oasis.

There was nothing that I disliked. It was wonderful.

The property is beautiful with loads of scenic mountains. Ryan, his partner and staff went above and beyond to accommodate with everything we needed. Will most definitely be going again. The hike trails are amazing
