"A magical spot on Valentia"

10.0

We had the absolute privilege of spending a few days in Cul Cottage over Easter 2024. Ger and Derarca have created something really special here, allowing people to experience a step back in time on the edge of Ireland. Staying in a 200-year old cottage is, of course, not going to be the same as a modern holiday home...the house has its quirks and that's part of the charm! Bring plenty of fuel for the stove, get cosy and enjoy this very special place.

"Freezing cold"

It was clean and the property location was lovely. Ger who we met was a lovely gentleman. It’s perfect if you want the 200 year old house experience

Staying here is not for the faint of heart outside of summer weather. We booked 5 nights but could only stay one we were freezing cold and the fire gives out almost no heat.

Beautiful, quaint cottage with tasteful, 'old Irish' decor in a lovely location full of wild nature & scenic views. The host had made an effort to put up beautiful Christmans decorations for us - a lovely gesture. Ample parking. Very comfortable & clean beds with more than enough extra blankets. Promised mod cons were there & working. Having no TV was amazing! The peace & quiet at night was extraordinary & we slept extremely well.

Message from host after making the booking to say we would need to pay separately for electricity since the cost of energy has increased. We wrote back to say that this was not specified in the Booking.com advert so either we would not pay separately for electricity or we would request a full refund. The host agreed to not charge extra. Cleanliness aound the house (apart from the beds which were clean) was only fair & in some places poor. The house was very damp; windows & walls became very wet when cooking even with extractor fan on & window open. The shower (which appeared to be electric but apparently was not) ran cold very quickly (after about 4 minutes) so on some days we had cold showers; then again maybe we did not understand the system... The stairs were very steep & taller family members knocked their heads more than once coming down; one would need to be physically able to access bedrooms as both are upstairs.
