The Apple Pickers' Cottages

Pros: pretty rural location, convenient to Abel Tasman National Park, beautiful views of estuary just behind the cabins, nice bathroom and shower (watch your head with the sloping bathroom ceiling), storage room off bath that is great for keeping luggage out of the way

Cons: Upon arrival, we briefly turned on the AC evaporator but shut it off immediately because of a strong musty, burnt smell. At bedtime we spotted a large roach above the evaporator. After spraying it with Raid it scrambled into the unit, suggesting a possible infestation that would explain the odor. The cabin warmed quickly; we opened a window and closed the curtains, but a swarm of mosquitoes still got in. It became so hot and uncomfortable that at 3 AM we evacuated and slept in the car. The next morning we checked into a bug-free motel in Nelson. We didn’t contact the owners since there were no quick fixes. This is a rural, pesticide-free property (aside from the Raid), and it seems that many guests aren’t bothered by these issues, but the mosquito bites and unusable AC were unacceptable for us. Owners should consider adding an exterior screen to the front sliding window, inspecting and cleaning the AC evaporators, and providing a fan for air circulation.

Secluded, fab views. Elspeth was very helpful before and during our stay. Free laundry facilities. Binoculars in the cottage, beach towels available. Elspeth couldn't manage to add the cost of our late request for a breakfast hamper to our booking and so didn't charge us - very kind of her. What was there not to like!!

When I booked it wasn't evident that a breakfast package could be arranged - I would suggest making this obvious on the accommodation information.

• We loved the peace & quietness (lot's of birds) • The view & vibe were sooo cozy • Very well equipped kitchen • Such a lovely host (had some nice chats and we even got beach towels provided)

• The door to the toilet due to such small moving space - would have been more practical if it'd be a slide door into the wall

Loved the views and the location was halfway between Nelson and Abel Tasman Natl Park. The cottage was beautiful and very cozy with all the creature comforts!

The second bedroom was actually a sunroom that had to be made up upon arrival to accommodate us.

Everything was spotlessly clean. The view from the cottage is absolutely breathtaking. Great place to relax.
