Casa da Esperança

We arrived on a very rainy evening, around 8:30 PM, and despite the weather the host was already there waiting for us with the keys. Nuno, the person who welcomed us, was wonderful—he explained everything clearly about the house and the surrounding area. A second group from our party arrived later and encountered a fallen tree blocking the road. We had a baby and a child with us, so it was a stressful moment. When we contacted the owner, they responded immediately and offered help to make sure our friends could reach the property safely. Thankfully, the Bombeiros (firefighters) arrived quickly and cleared the road. Overall, the hosts were extremely kind and supportive, especially given the difficult weather conditions. Their quick communication and willingness to help made a huge difference. Truly appreciated!

Honestly, there wasn’t anything significant that we didn’t like. The only challenge was the weather and the narrow mountain road, but that’s not the property’s fault. Everything inside the house was comfortable, and the hosts were excellent. In fact, the wild nature and unpredictable weather ended up giving us a memorable little adventure.

What a great and unique experience to finally go in and stay inside one of the stone houses inside the Schist Villages/aldeias do xisto in the Lousã region! Casa da Esperança looks very appealing and beautiful outside, but it is also very cute and functional inside. The space is arranged nicely inside the house, and it feels very roomy everywhere in the house. We could not believe there are 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms inside this cute little stone house! The outdoor patio area is very cute and pleasant, too. It was an especially amazing experience because of the hospitality of the host, Senhora Elvira. She made sure the house was super clean, well-stocked with toiletries + water + several breakfast items. There was also a vase of nice, fresh flowers on the table waiting for us when we came. She basically got the house ready for us the way I get my house ready for my dear family and friends. During our stay, she also gave us freshly picked blueberries and sweet oranges, which we enjoyed very much. There is no restaurant or shop in the tiny village of Chiqueiro, but the hiking path to the other Schist Villages (e.g. to the village of Talasnal that has restaurants or cafes) is only steps away from Casa da Esperança. The picnic area with the “Lousã” giant letters is also a short walk away from Casa da Esperança. There are quite a few of praia fluvials within 30-minute drive. It was a very hot summer week when we went there, with the temperature averaging around 33 – 36 degrees Celcius every day. There is no air conditioning, and all the bedrooms are upstairs. The host provided us with several fans in the bedrooms, and surprisingly, we had no issue with the heat at night with the fans on!
