Casa dos Avos

Casa dos Avos was a great find! It's an entire house with lots of little details, it seems like this is an old village house they renovated and also sometimes use themselves, so it has a lot more character than a typical holiday rental. The bedroom is large and there is lots of closet space. The kitchen is huge and with lots of stuff (in contrast to many other places it had coffee capsules and dishwasher tablets). But the very best was the BBQ, which is like in the pictures, a real, stone BBQ and they provide plenty of wood, we had a BBQ like every second evening. We also just ate outside every day because the weather is perfect and the view is unbeatable. Nothing better than to enjoy your grilled dinner with a nice glass of Madeira or your breakfast with a view. :) Because it's higher up it gets refreshingly chilly in the evening (much better than down in Funchal), even in summer. The house doens't have aircondition but doesn't really need it either. Absolutely would return!!

As has been noted in other comments, the access to the house is... interesting. The street is very narrow and steep, the parking has to be done backwards in a very specific way (with about 10cm of margin), so don't rent a large car! It's a one-way street and you have to surround all the ridge again to get back, so better don't forget anything in the morning :) We were only one couple, but there are two full bedrooms, both nice, but as also remarked before, the only full bathroom is en-suite to the somewhat larger bedroom. The living room has no real windows but we anyhow mostly spent the time on the terrace, being Madeira I guess you can do that basically all year round. Since it does get hot in the afternoon in the main bedroom, which has large windows, it would be good to put some outside shutters, the dark curtain doesn't really do the job against the heat. But if you air enough before going to sleep it's ok. But, of course, the worst thing of all was... that we only had one week there!! :(((
