"Very good"

8.0

The breakfast was good. The lunch and dinner were very good. We did not need a huge lunch but there is a set price for both lunch and dinner. So if you take any lunch, you pay the full price. The facilities are very old, so the room was not as pristine as some might expect in a hotel. However, the bathroom was clean and the bedding was very clean and comfortable. The location was relaxing and the hosts were very accommodating.

"A not to be missed stay in the countryside."

The food was the best I had all trip. Talking to the hosts I learned a lot about Uruguay that I wouldn’t have learned any other way.

"Laidback country experience - walking, riding, relaxing and eating. A historic place with rustic charm."

10.0

This is a genuine country experience on an estancia that’s been there since the mid-1800s. Owners Carmen and Joselo are backed up by gaucho Mario who manages the horses and sheep, as well as the estancias grounds a d gardens, and accompanied us on our horse riding along with his two sheepdogs; Lorene, who cooked us three fantastic meals each day (and Joselo who fires up the wood stove to cook assado!) and our housekeeper whose name I don’t know but who was always smiling and friendly and looked after us too. Beautiful starry skies, lovely walks to the river and lagoon, lots of birdlife, great selection of books and artefacts. Feels like family, but with as much of your own space as you want. And an ‘honesty bar’ to enhance the magnificent sunsets!

Leaving this idyllic place!

"Disappointed, overhyped."

4.0

Fun way to meet other guests

Dinner s a rip off. $70 for a small portion of shepherds pie, tiny salad and a drink/2people. No choice. Breakfast minimal. Fresh oj. $100 room minimal. Overpriced. Everything priced as add on. RESPONSE: Thank you for the good wishes. We booked a “suite” including breakfast for approximately $100US. Not sure why this one average size room is a suite. We requested dinner which for 2 people was $70 additional including one large beer and 2 glasses wine. Beg to differ but you didn't discuss the menu with me. Perhaps with the other couple staying there. We did book late but perhaps you should not accept a booking or dinner reservation if you feel you can’t provide to your standards. Breakfast would be improved with made to order eggs or hot food rather than cold scrambled eggs which have been sitting in a bowl on the buffet. And yogurt. You are lovely people and offer a unique motel environment. Wish we could have been happier with the experience.

"Peace in Paradise. A lovely Estancia run by fabulous people"

10.0

A fabulous 3 days at Estancia El Ceibo. We were made to feel like family by Joselu, Carmen and the team. The peace, serenity and beauty of the place is difficult to adequately put into words. We just loved it. We walked in the forest (saved by Mario!!), wandered in the fields, rode horses, ate delicious food and then just chilled and read. 3 days flew by. We would highly recommend and again, so many thanks to everyone at Estancia El Ceibo for making us feel so welcome.

"A highlight of our time in Uruguay"

9.0

Experience the culture of Uruguay at an estancia close to Montevideo. Fields with sheep and horses grazing. A lagoon and river with many birds. A sky full of stars and no city lights. The owners, Carmen and Joselo are warm and welcoming, full of stories and good humor. We soon felt like family. We enjoyed the company and lively conversations with other guests staying at the estancia as we sat together for dinner. The staff is very friendly and a pleasure to talk with. The food-breakfast, lunch and dinner was delicious. I'm a vegetarian and I had no shortage of choices. Joselo is a master of asado which my husband enjoyed greatly. Really exceptional cooking. Horseback riding is available for all levels of ability, along with long, lovely walks through the fields. We enjoyed our stay and would love to return.

We enjoyed everything about our stay

"Warm, fun, comfortable, good food, horse riding …"

10.0

The property is a historic family home over 150 years old and owned by this family for over 30years. The owners and all the staff were warm and welcoming. We loved the food and the horse riding. The asada was melt in the mouth and every meal there was a different vegetarian tart as an option. Mario the gaucho is very patient and very cool. Joselo took us in his jeep and gave us a lot of information about local nature. Carmen has a great personality. All these things are a bonus.

I think people need to realise that this is an older property and therefore expect to find bathroom a little dated but the shower in our room was very good and although we only needed to use the air conditioning once it was very good.

"Carmen and her crew are wonderful people, and this place is definitely a hidden gem of Uruguay."

10.0

Beautiful location, beautiful facilities, and above all, beautiful people. The “farm alarm” in the morning was refreshing (if a rooster crowing as the sun comes up bothers you, skip this location and book something in the city). Take a horseback ride around the property, you’ll enjoy it!

That I couldn’t stay longer was the only thing not to like.
