Casa das Raposas

Absolutely the best stay we had on our entire camino, from Lisbon to Santiago.

Wow, what a beautiful and modern studio in a charming stone building right on the Camino! It was perfect for us. The studio is spacious with a well-appointed kitchenette and a large bathroom with a great shower. It started raining right after we arrived, but we didn't mind. The studio was a comfortable place to write in our journals, enjoy the dinner items we brought with us, and relax for the evening. A nice touch was that wine was available in the room for purchase at a reasonable cost, so we enjoyed adding a bottle of wine to our dinner. Overall, we highly recommended Casa das Raposas to anyone walking the Camino. The location allowed us to have a moderate 22 km walk from Ansiao and then a short walk the following day so that we had plenty of time to explore the marvelous Roman ruins in Conimbriga.

These are not negatives, but just things for other travelers to understand ahead of time. First, entry may be contactless without a host on-site. We received a message telling us where to find the key. It took us a bit of time to find the entrance and once we did, to realize that the first door on the right inside the gate with a sign on the door is the studio itself and not an office. The key was right where we were told it would be and everything went smoothly after that. Second, plan well ahead for food or go hungry. We did not see anywhere in the small town of Zambujal to get food. We actually got food at the large Intermarche market in Ansiao and brought it in our backpacks, and were very glad we did. The small market in Rabacal was closed at the time we walked through that town. The only other food option we saw anywhere close to Zambujal was the cafeteria at Albergue O Bonito in Rabacal which is 3.7 km away from Casa das Raposas. Pilgrims could consider eating a hearty meal at O Bonito before proceeding to Zambujal if they don't want to carry extra food but would be wise to verify that the cafeteria's kitchen will be open at the time they expect to arrive there.

Village has no bar or shops!

Great facilities, comfortable.

Food shop in Rabacal closes at 12:30 pm on Sundays. Get food from cafe/restaurant in Rabacal instead. No food available in area closer to accommodation.
