Wir hatten ein gemütliches Bungalow im Herzen der Insel, von wo aus wir alles super erreichen konnten. Die Mitarbeitenden waren sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit. Fahrräder konnte man hier auch direkt leihen. Wir haben jedoch für einen Aufpreis etwas neuere Räder an anderer Stelle gemietet, aber das ist nur eine Frage der Präferenz :)

L’accueil des hôtes a été irréprochable ! Toujours souriants, aidants… un vrai plus sur cette petite île. Le logement était très propre et confortable. Le petit déjeuner était très bien servi et délicieux!

We stayed at Abam’s for one month while working and looking for a permanent house to move into on Gili Air. While it’s a simple place, it offers several thoughtful features that really helped us feel more at home. The sofa, TV with Netflix, and hot/cold water dispenser available 24/7 were very appreciated during a longer stay — especially since those amenities are surprisingly hard to find on the island, even in more expensive places. Having flexible breakfast hours was also a huge plus for us, as we both work and needed that extra bit of freedom in the mornings. The team was friendly and responsive whenever we had questions or small issues. For example, when the shower pressure wasn’t great at the beginning, they fixed it quickly and after that it worked perfectly, with hot and strong water. Another small but meaningful touch: they were generous with toilet paper — something that’s genuinely rare across Southeast Asia, and a detail we appreciated more than we expected! Bike rental and laundry were cheaper than most other places we’ve stayed in on the island, and the shared fridge and large back area to dry clothes were very useful during the month. If you’re looking for a basic but well-equipped place with long-stay-friendly facilities and kind, flexible staff, this is definitely a solid option in Gili Air.

Overall, we had a memorable stay, but I’d like to share a few things that could help future guests and the management. The water in the bathroom was salty, which was a first for me and a bit hard to get used to at the beginning. However, I understand this can be quite common on Indonesian islands due to local water systems, so it’s good to know in advance for future guests who might not be familiar with this. During the final week of our stay, we did notice a few cockroaches in the bathroom area. It wasn’t a major issue, but I’d recommend perhaps placing some preventative measures like insect repellent or discreet traps near the sink to avoid this. A small tip for guests: try to avoid leaving food out, even snacks, as it can attract insects in tropical climates. There was also a moment of miscommunication regarding my husband, who is local, being referred to as my “friend.” While this may have been unintentional, it did touch on something sensitive for us, as mixed couples can sometimes face assumptions or feel overlooked. I really appreciated that once clarified, the staff immediately began referring to him as my husband, which made a difference and showed respect. Tip: it’s close to the best beaches for sunset (10 min walk), movie night at Royal Regantris, Working on Air cowork, and the harbour and most shops.
