"Gorgeous Location for a Rural Ireland Visit"

10.0

We loved everything about our stay at Marsh Mere! Coming to Marsh Mere was one of the the main reasons we made our trip to Ireland and the UK. The McNamara family home Bed & Breakfast is situated on an estuary on the Hook Peninsula. Anything we could think of seemed to be anticipated by Clare and Vincent McNamara the sister and brother who run Marsh Mere Lodge. Clare provides an amazing breakfast and has a wealth of knowledge of local attractions and lore. Full disclosure, Vincent breeds Pembroke Corgis and we bought a dog from him 4 years ago, and we wanted to see where our puppy came from. But once we were there, we were amazed at the wealth of history and scenery in this south east peninsula. There's a convenient ferry five minutes away to get to Waterford. Going in the other directions, we visited the Hook Lighthouse, reported to be the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in the world, built sometime in the 12th century, with a history going back to an abbey in the 5th century that built bonfires to help navigate between Wales and Ireland. Marsh Mere is a perfect place to base exploration of Southeast Ireland.

I can't think of anything that the McNamaras could do to make Marsh Mere a better spot to visit. I guess I would warn those depending on SatNav not to pay attention to directions that deviate from highway R733 from Rosslare through Wellingtonbridge to Arthurstown. We wound up on some one lane tracks barely wide enough for one vehicle because of SatNav. But that is completely out of the control of Marsh Mere.

We loved our stay at Marsh Mere, the short car ferry ride to get there was a treat and the location of the property was superb, Claire the host was so lovely and welcoming. We said hello to the Corgis and chickens, the breakfast was the best we had on our whole trip, truly a gem!

Clare is so welcoming and nothing was to much bother to her. She recommended and booked out restaurant for the evening. The rooms are full of antiques, quirky and just delightful. Would highly recommend staying here and would come back in a flash.
