"Excellent place if you're deaf! Maybe the owner will learn to be quiet at night one day."

5.0

This is a really great hostel except for the noise from the billiards room upstairs; they blast some pretty awful music into the night. And apparently it's the owner that controls both so it is incomprehensible how he can be so inconsiderate. This is by far the cheapest hostel in town and the staff was great. Very helpful and patient with my mangled Spanish, plus most spoke reasonable English. There's a great kitchen up on the roof offering a nice view, even to Zicatela so if you have a great eyes, or binoculars, you can check out the wave height right there. Another good place to check waves is on the south side of the overpass really close to Chedraui (15.861932685077825, -97.06668131946185 on Google Maps). You cross the highway on the overpass and on the south side you can see part of Zicatela. No hot water but the showers are reasonably clean. The mattresses were really good. I was there in March-April of 2026 so maybe they have replaced them recently. Another unfortunate problem for non-smokers is this place, like so many hostels, really seems to attract smoking, both tobacco and pot. You can smell it most everywhere if there isn't a strong wind. One day hostels will be totally smoke free. They should at least restrict it to the terrace on top as that is where the wind is most effective. There is a sitting area on the main floor where people sometimes talk loudly and as the rooms kind of surround this area it can wake you up. Their doors don't seal very well so noise pours in. At least, being downtown, there are no roosters starting up at 2 in the morning that plagues so many other places, especially Madre Tierre that is right beside a little rooster/dog colony. I could never understand how Mexicans tolerate noise at night but they just don't realize how it disturbs their sleep. NO ONE can sleep deeply with noise. This has been proven scientifically. You cannot get into a deep REM sleep with noise.

Dogs and roosters have very penetrating vocal abilities. It takes a LOT of careful soundproofing and sealing to block it out. They don't seem to care a bit. Though when you go to more upper scale areas it's a lot quieter. And the dogs are screechy, little pesky tiny dogs with shrill barks. They are really expensive in most western countries, like probably around $1000 USD but in Mexico they are running around everywhere. In months there I saw Mexicans walking their dogs maybe 3 times. Clearly they have little care for their pets. You see birds in the worst cages in utter filth. Nobody cares.
