Portola Grand Arabia Hotel

There was a nice rooftop restaurant. Good views, amazing for sunset, next to the park.

The WiFi inthe rooms was very weak, we had to go to the restaurant.

Stayed 3 nights. Clean and comfortable room. Friendly staff. Quiet location facing a park. Only downside was that several floor tiles in the room were loose.

The hotel is located very centrally in Medan and certainly one of the up-scale hotels in the city. We stayed overnight before heading on to Pulau Weh. Due to a bus delay, we checked in very late at night, which was not a problem due to 24/7 reception. Communication ahead of time was quick. Please be advised that a sign at the entrance will inform you that this is a Sharia Hotel - for Western Tourists like us there seemed to be no specific expectation related to this, but we would recommend dressing respectfully when going to breakfast etc. (like most anywhere in Aceh actually).

It felt like the hotel was a couple of years past its prime. E.g. you could see the wooden bathroom door frame was already falling apart. Breakfast was a bit of a challenge for our European stomach, which is less of a complaint as an information to those choosing between hotel options (as we are very aware that we are not the main target audience for this hotel - there's few European tourists in Banda Aceh in general).

Good enough if .... All is good especially the location except for 4 things. It is convenient for guests who want to be close to the main attractions. Unfortunately we had to change rooms due to bad smell in the room that may have been caused by previous guests smoking in the bathroom or dampness or both. Secondly I specifically asked before booking about the internet connection, whether it is strong enough for an online meeting and the answer was yes, however I found out that it wasn't strong enough. Thirdly, the phones in the rooms were not working and no one explained about it. We were trying to get hold of room service and reception for ages before going down to ask what's wrong with it. Finally, I think guests should have priority parking over visitors of their restaurants. There's a night that we had to park at a paid parking opposite the hotel because it was full.

Nice service, smooth check in without any extra payment (deposit), as I already make the payment upfront. Getting the room, at level 3, toward the end of the corner. Spacious room, but the room floor a bit unsatisfactory, feel a bit sticky. Complete toiletries with a good laundry service, fast respond too. For the breakfast, the food not so variety. Maybe can be consider on more food options.
