Didn't go through no fault of our own

There were flying ants all over the property. I had booked this last minute as I needed a place to stay, and upon arrival, I noticed that there were flying ants all over the windowsill and the radiator. I then raised this with the landlords, who responded and said I should be entitled to a refund for the booking through booking.com. Not only that, they asked for my bank details to return the security deposit. I gave them my bank details and messaged quite a few days later asking where my refund was. They completely ignored my message and I still haven’t received any refund to this day. I was in the property for a maximum of 30 minutes, of which mine and my friends boyfriends checked out the place just to make sure everything was fine before they left us be. I am appalled at the customer service received here, as I most definitely didn’t damage anything in the property considering I was there for a maximum of 30 minutes. The only thing we had to do was try and kill the ants!! I’m currently raising the concern with my bank to hopefully get the money returned, as I am now short of £200 a least and had to go out of my way to book elsewhere that night and spend more money as the place was definitely not sanitary enough for us to stay the night considering there was flying ants everywhere!

Cracking little cottage with all necessary fittings. Loads of useful information from the owners prior to arrival. Very quiet location. Would definitely stay there again.

Access/maneuvering for parking spot was very tight, and more suited to a pretty small car. Last minute request for a £100 deposit just two days prior to travelling.

Great location. Great privacy.

The skylight window in the bedroom doesn’t have a curtain. The sunlight hit my face at 4am and I was wide awake.

I didn’t like that there was an extra £100 deposit in case of damages to be paid to the owner’s personal bank account. This was mentioned in the listing but it made me very uncomfortable that it wasn’t handled through booking.com. If things had gone badly and the owner decided he didn’t like us he could have kept it and I would have had no recourse to get the money back. The worst part was that on the day of our arrival the owner texted to say he would charge an extra £15 for early arrival when we had discussed and prearranged for an early arrival several weeks earlier. Thankfully he didn’t apply this extra fee in the end. We only arrived 40 minutes before the earliest listed check-in time of 4pm. I have received my £100 deposit back already too (next day after departure) so I guess all’s well that ends well. But it added a lot of unnecessary stress to our trip.

It was a good location especially for a solo traveller. It was well set up and had the necessary facilities. It was in a quiet setting.

I has some issues with cleanliness e.g. the bedding was smelly and I had to wash it myself, the teapot was mouldy and a pan was burnt. Although the landlord dealt with some of these issues, I had no apology or compensation for the smelly sheets. I found the landlord who came around rather intimidating and defensive.
