Sky Lodge

Great amenities. Very friendly and helpful staff. Nice sea view in a quiet part of town.

Sky lodge is self catering, so there is no milk, tea or coffee etc. Stop at a shop before you sign in! The room is large and airy, the bed also large and comfy. The lovely man who manages your stay is very helpful and kind - he dropped us into to town to pick up supplies on our first day.

The location is a loooong walk (3.5 km) from Nukualofa city centre, so unless you hire a car, I'd recommend somewhere closer to town. Also the road noise is quite significant.

We stayed in a spacious studio apartment on the upper level with a fabulous view across a lush garden to the sea. The host was friendly and allowed us to check in early, for which we were grateful after a long flight. The apartment was clean, the shower was nice and hot, it was quiet at night and we were happy with our stay. The bottles of water provided were very welcome, too! The property is not right in the centre of town but there is parking available and it's a short hop in by taxi. We were only there for a night, with no car, but there was a fantastic restaurant next door that made heading out for dinner and a drink very easy! We hadn't been sure what to expect from other reviews, but were very pleasantly surprised and would stay again.

Location was great, over the road from the beach, several good restaurants within walking distance, and Ancient Tonga cultural show just around the corner. 3km from the centre of Nuku'alofa so would recommend getting a rental car to travel around the island and see all the attractions. Uliti, the manager, is the most kind and helpful person - he arranged our rental car at a great rate when we arrived and recommended things to do and places to eat. We will definitely stay here again, was well appointed with a kitchenette and separate bedroom, balcony overlooking the garden and beach and free parking. I highly recommend Sky Lodge!!!

Nice and quiet, great sleep on comfortable beds. A great view of the waterfront in the morning and at night. I loved the privacy and my own studio. Everything was clean. There was a very handy restaurant next door for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And a microwave oven and fridge in the room which was very handy. The bathroom was clean and well stocked. Water pressure is normal for an island. Uliti and his team are great, just ask, " more towels, laundry needs, tour of the island, best coffee, where can I listen to church choirs on Sunday" they will know it all. Wifi was free and great connectivity.

No bicycles to ride on. A lot of cars on the road. Quite surprised there is no bike hire to cruise the waterfront. Pot holes on the main roads so be aware allow extra time to get to places.

If you want to learn about the Kingdom of Tonga and especially its people- this lodge is the place to go. We were so fortunate having Oliti on our side all the time who drove us around the island to very special locations we would have never found on our own. The lodge provides a beautiful view overseeing the Pacific Ocean, the room had all you need, we loved the light breeze flowing through the room. We did not have to turn on the a/c at all this time of the year. We were very impressed by all the flowers, the cleanliness of the island, the markets where we shopped, the little restaurant next door, the church service, the impressive historic sites, the absolute quiet Sunday. But most importantly-we got to know the most friendly people we have ever met. Tanja took the time to sum up our visit and Oliti brought us to the airport at 3am in the morning.

Sky Lodge is situated on the seafront, it has a beautifully maintained garden in front of the apartments. Each apartment has its own very private verandah or balcony which are a very generous size when compared to verandahs and balconies at many other establishments. The apartment was spacious with a seperate bedroom and had most of the basics you needed if you were to cook for yourself. There is also air conditioning which I am sure you will need in the warmer months. Uliti, Mele and Tania were all very friendly and helpful during our stay. Uliti provided transport to and from the airport and Tania took us to get a rental car as this was some walking distance away. Next door is Mamas Harbourview restaurant which provides breakfast, lunch and dinner aside from a Sunday which is a day of rest. Down the road is Builder's Burgers which also has a good range of burgers as well as other dishes on offer overlooking the saltwater swimming pool.

I wouldn't say this was something I didn't like as I think being further out of town was a bonus especially as it has a lovely sea view however Sky Lodge is a good 45mins walking distance to town and so you definitely need a car. Note also that Sky Lodge is alcohol-free which is something that is not advertised on their website nor is it brought to one's attention when booking and maybe this needs to be made clearer on the website and when booking so that people are not disappointed when they arrive.
