"Good location, otherwise old-fashioned and uncomfortable."

5.0

Reasonably priced and useful for a family to stay in the St Albans area. The house is in a quiet secure location with good facilities, off-road parking and lovely big garden and deck. The kitchen and main downstairs bathroom are well equipped. The garden furniture looked good and the stay would have been a much better experience on a dry summer's day.

The house is in need of modernization. It is draughty and badly insulated, I had not seen single-glazed windows for decades until I stayed here! Some of the windows had very old and shabby 'secondary glazing' over them, but that is not effective or efficient. The floor is bare, old floorboards throughout, which might appeal as 'an original feature' but have no practical appeal and do not add any value to guests. The main front door has a lock that doesn't work or fit - something I could fix in 10 minutes if I'd had any tools with me!!. The only way to keep it closed was to lock it with the secondary key - one only, no spare. The upstairs bathroom is a disaster. The door does not lock (the lock is installed the wrong way around!), the flush takes a lot of effort to make work and has a very small cistern, the badly fitted window makes it cold and draughty and the shower over the bath has a badly fitted screen that doesn't close properly. The towels and bed linen were clean, but not much else was ! The property can sleep 8 people - but they wouldn't be able to sit comfortably in either the lounge, kitchen or dining area. The lounge has a single sofa-bed that is very uncomfortable and dirty (it is the cheapest you can get from Ikea - I know because I owned one exactly the same for a couple of months before throwing it away after all my friends agreed it was actually the most uncomfortable sofa they had ever sat on) The TV is too high on the wall, we all had neck-ache from trying to watch a film together - with 3 on the sofa, 2 sitting on rickety barstool type chairs, 1 on a wooden dining-room chair (one of five which are around the four-place dining table!) and the other leaning on the kitchen counter with no other option available. When I complained about the seating to the owner, they suggested using the garden chairs!!- It was raining, very windy and cold at the time..
