Location is perfect for Scafell Pike and loads of other hikes, Wast Water. A less busy and more secluded area of the lakes. All the staff were really friendly and I liked how many games were available in the bar.

It feels that the owners haven't spent a penny on upkeep since the 50s. There is some classic charm and history but also a lot of grubbiness. Manky old carpets, the place desperately needs a refresh. No one cleaned our room/replaced towells the 3 days we were there, despite leaving the sign out saying please clean. The shower was weak and took a long time to run hot, forgivable for a remote location but clearly an old plumbing system. It felt that the inn is economising everywhere it can: portion sizes, staffing levels, even no orange juice at breakfast one day. It's all a lot of money for what it is, both the stay and the food. They get a lot of passing trade and it's the only inn in the area. Without the location factor and monopoly on pub trade I think they'd be forced to up their game or go out of business.

Staff, they were really good. Super helpful despite being really busy, they couldn;t have done more for us.

The hotel needs a refurb and money spending on it. It;s authentic, but lacked some facilities to warrant the price paid.
