"Slightly disappointing"

6.0

My wife and I stayed at L'auberge for a night for a belated birthday celebration. We had high hopes based on the many positive reviews, but our experience was mildly disappointing. Cons: the room. Ours (Mistral), was very dark--much darker than in online photos. It felt wet, too, I expect due to the AC unit (wall mounted, not central, and tricky to operate). The bed was very creaky. When turned on, the bathroom fan screeched nonstop. There were ugly, fluorescent-green plastic vines wrapped around the chandelier in the center of the room. It felt like nothing had been updated in 30 years---and not in a charming way. The grounds: I'd read nice things about the garden, but it's a relatively small space and situated at the front of the property. Any time you're near the front of the property, you'll hear cars whoosh past. The main building is set back <75 feet from the road. If you're sitting on the front porch, you'll look out at a white fence bordering the property--and hear the cars. So-so: the food. We stayed for dinner (at La Table Provencale, ordering off the a la carte menu) and breakfast the next morning. Her bouillabaisse was just fine. My L'auberge burger was very good--hefty and well-cooked. We also ordered a pizza to share topped with burrata, caramelized onions, and prosciutto, which was tasty. The breakfast was lacking. You have your choice of several egg dishes. Ours were very under-seasoned (add-ons, like the yogurt parfait we ordered, cost in the ballpark of an extra $10). Since the breakfast is complementary and heavy on egg/potato dishes, juice or fruit at no extra cost would've been a nice touch. Pros: the staff. Between dinner drinks and food, about 4 waitstaff checked on us throughout the evening. They were very polite and attentive. The dining area (and the rest of the main house) blend a fresh, contemporary vibe with a historic quality. It was very cozy--but stood in stark contrast to our actual room, which was, frankly, dumpy. Overall, I wouldn't return here, at least not for the price we paid ($300 for a Saturday night stay, booked on Hotels.com). There are other B&Bs in the area that feel more removed/serene, with more comfortable bedrooms, and comparable food and service.

A really great experience. I can’t imagine staying anywhere else in the area. A great mix of feeling cared for and having privacy.

"The property didn’t live up to expectations"

5.0

The breakfast good

Extremely expensive restaurant , Food was ok but not worth the cost , wine list was all extremely expensive. At breakfast the waiter presented us with the bill and had highlighted where we were supposed to leave a gratuity for the breakfast staff and housekeeping . Rooms were passable but not up to the standard of all the other properties we had stayed in on our trip . The rooms are a little tired. Location is handy for Skyline and Dulles Airport , but is on a noisy main road

"Disappointing room, remote location, expensive restaurant options."

4.0

Breakfast was ok, served by great staff member, but didn’t really live up to it’s description of “gourmet”. It was just as expected for the price point.

The room and facilities were dated and tired. Ok, it’s a historical property but really it misses the point. Poor air con, a TV the size of Pc screen parked on a shelf so difficult to view. The location is actually on a busy highway, although the double glazed windows keep noise down once in the room. Overall this is predominantly a restaurant with rooms.

Super friendly service and the food at the restaurant was excellent.

My room faced the street and the traffic noise is pretty loud.
