Amba Yaalu - Thema Collection "The first women-led hotel in Sri Lanka"

We loved our stay here. The grounds were beautiful, our room was incredibly clean with a gorgeous balcony looking across the mango orchard, and the pool was absolutely lovely. The hotel is designed so that it’s very open to the outside, so you feel like you’re in the middle of nature. We loved the decorative touches, like the wall of masks and the display of colourful bangles behind the reception desk. The whole concept of the hotel, as a women-led enterprise, is unique. This was our first hotel in Sri Lanka and it was only later that we realised how unusual it is to have so many women in these roles. It gives the hotel a calming atmosphere as all of the staff were so kind and welcoming from the moment we arrived (and lit the ceremonial peacock oil lamp!). I didn’t try the spa but my mum booked a treatment and, although a bit pricey, she loved it. The buffet breakfast was delicious, with a lot of vegan and vegetarian choices, although the dinner menu was a bit limited for vegans. We stayed two nights and wished we’d booked another, as we were so comfortable here.

A very minor thing, but the service could be quite slow - particularly when using the sun loungers or sitting outside by the pool. It felt at times that we were a bit forgotten, as no one came to take drinks orders and we had to get up and go to the bar. Not really a big deal but it would have been nice if staff had been more attentive here.

This place and its concept is just amazing. We travelled with two teens and we were all stunned. The unique female stuff was so outstanding helpful and we got so much information on the place, its concept, the idea of the hotel and how they feel. We stayed for 3 nights and had breakfast and dinner at the hotel. The food was exquisit. We were travelling off season, so there were less people at the hotel than normal. We've had the pool most of the time just for us. As we were travelling with our driver friend, the hotel was not out of reach for us. Thus, at the hotel, they provide driver (a female driver of course) as well. The connected SPA Ayurvie was also amazing and is a good opportunity to relax even more. Chathuni, our guest relation manager was a bliss and we were all sad when leaving. Therefore, we sure come back to this women-led-juwel! We were really impressed by the empowering spirit that reigns at this place.
