I had a wonderful experience at Finca El Tambor. It’s located in the middle of nature and is very clean. Suzy is helpful and responsive. The restaurant, Ivanno, serves delicious food, and the owner is a great host. I do wish I had known beforehand about the long walk and the hill leading to the property. Along the way, I also wish there had been more lighting. That said, I really appreciated the flashlight provided in the house—it was very helpful when I arrived late from Antigua or left early for my trip to Lake Atitlán. I highly recommend it.

Finca El Tambor is a truly special place—more of a retreat-style experience away from everything, than a traditional hotel. The absolute highlight was the breathtaking view of the surrounding hills and volcanoes.. The accommodations were cozy, with a very comfortable bed, small kitchen, and even a yoga mat, and welcome bottle of wine which was a nice touch. Just a heads-up: this is more of a glamping experience than a hotel stay, and it’s good to know that going in. It’s located about 20 minutes outside downtown Antigua, and is also very close to Hobbitenango. The drive up is a winding dirt road along the edge of a mountain. It didn’t bother our Uber driver, but it might feel a bit nerve-wracking for those not used to that type of terrain as it is narrow and a bit rugged. The biggest challenge for our group was getting to our accommodations. The paths are STEEP and cobblestone, and definitely NOT suitcase-friendly. One friend in our group, who is not an avid hiker like the other two of us, had a really hard time with the steep walk, and we’d strongly caution that this is not the best choice if you have any mobility issues or cannot navigate steep hills. I will say that our hosts were extremely responsive and did everything possible to support and accommodate us, for which we were very grateful Overall, Finca El Tambor is stunning, peaceful, and unique—but likely best suited for travelers who are comfortable with a more rustic and adventurous setting.

"Una experiencia diferente"

La cabaña estuvo espectacular, y en general la propiedad es muy bonita. Lo único a mejorar sería que dieran claridad sobre lo complicado del acceso al sitio por caminos de tierra y que algunas habitaciones como la que nos tocó requieren de esfuerzo físico para acceder a ellas (no recomendadas para personas con cualquier tipo de incapacidad o discapacidad física) por lo demás muy bien.

"Beautiful views but we expected more"

6.0

The first room we booked was a small bungalow, but because of the constitution noise they moved us without a fuss to an apartment which was actually much nicer. The views were amazing and you could see birds and other small wildlife right at your balcony, and also sitting on the sofa inside thanks to the big window. The value for money in terms of accommodation is ok, and you can get there for a reasonable price using Uber (if you book through them the price is more than double). Kitchen seemed to be equipped for basic cooking though we didn't try. The lady we were talking to was pretty available and tried to be as helpful as possible given the circumstances.

Might be our bad luck but it was VERY noisy when we were there. There was construction on the road that started early and only finished at around 4pm, in the evening there was a super loud party from a nearby village. Also in the morning music started from somewhere and woke us up. Overall, we couldn't really enjoy sitting outside looking at the view and the sound of the birds. Dinner was crazy overpriced for basic food in a medium quantity, my husband was actually still hungry and they refused to bring more food. We expected more from the most expensive dinner we had in Guatemala. Also, when we asked for hikes around to explore they didn't really know to tell us, and when we asked to leave our luggage for a few hours there was no option so keep that in mind.
