The Sandbeck, Commondale

The breakfast option was great fresh milk and cereal with other options to choose from, excellent clean room and a view of the coast line and sea is remarkable. Can’t wait to return to such a beautiful place and somewhere to totally relax. Parking is ample and convenient to the property. The ultimate question is would I want to return- MOST DEFINITELY

Everything we needed for a weekend break in a brilliant location. The room was spacious and having a fridge in the small kitchenette was ideal. Also liked the large shower cubicle and plenty of space to hang clothes. I liked the coat hooks and shoe rack in the entrance so they didn’t clutter the apartment. Would definitely stay here again.

We went to check in the property at 6:15pm. Check in can be done from 4pm-9pm, which a self serve check in. Upon entering the room, it hadn’t been cleaned from the previous guest. I contacted the owner (David) via a phone call, he was fairly dismissive but said he would contact the cleaners and to leave our bags. I heard back from David at 7:15pm to state why the room had not been cleaned - no mention that the room had been cleaned and we could check in at the point. I did not hear back from David that evening. We came back to the hotel at 11:30pm - the room has been cleaned. We were fortunate enough to have friends staying in Whitby, so from 6:15pm until we came back we were able to use their air b&b. When we arrived back, we were unable to get hot water from the tap, i let David know in the morning, again it’s a very defensive / dismissive response. David then offered a £25 refund, given the inconvenience and the fact the room was £134 I don’t feel this is sufficient. Other downside: The room is superficially clean. Cobwebs on the light and skirting boards covered in dust (see pics) No curtains, just wood blinds, so the room is very bright in the morning Breakfast is described as continental. However it’s a couple of cereal choices and yogurts. Both of which are in the fridge outside of the room Strong smell of air fresheners in the corridors Positives - great location. With beautiful view from the windows - easy to park - bed was comfy

could benefit from some curtains over the blinds because the sun was bright and fancied a lie in but other than that excellent

The position of the property.

The room looked nice & new but functionally poor. The beds were extremely uncomfortable with springs sticking in you. Chairs were uncomfortable and certainly not for relaxing. Hot water was variable, took an age to get warm in the shower & no hot water in the kitchenette, which was also far too cramped to be useful as a self catering area. As for the 'complimentary' breakfast forget it - if this hadn't been advertised we would have been better prepared with our own. I felt it was quite pricey as a self catering room! We also felt it lacked any personal touch - it was all a bit robotic with codes & keypads and where was the cosy bar with honesty box that was advertised on the website, where we may have seen another human body? As a celebration of our wedding anniversary and having worked in the hospitality sector for a number of years it was a very disappointing stay.

Breakfast was not technically included, but they have a little fridge in the hall with some cereal and yoghurts in that was fine for us, but some may not be happy with that.
