It’s character and surroundings and the staff, plus the big high ceiling rooms

Dated bathroom and some of the golf members did not seem to like or welcome none golfers using the bar/hotel facilities

Gorgeous setting and downstairs rooms, friendly staff, comfortable bed, nicely cooked breakfast, welcoming atmosphere.

No directions or signs to show guests where to park, so I had to park at the golf shop to ask how to access the hotel before being directed down a road which I had seen previously but had signage saying that it was a private road, not the overnight guest car park. I wasn't given a menu or told what the breakfast options were, just offered full English with no indication of what that was; guests arriving later were told the chef could do anything and chose other options. I was unable to use the ensuite shower, as at 10pm I noticed the shower tray (which was clear when I checked in that afternoon) was quarter full with brown liquid which appeared to have come from the drain. At 2am, it was completely covered in the brown liquid. At 6am, the liquid had drained away but there was water leaking from the toilet towards the shower. 10 minutes after flushing the toilet, the shower tray was quarter full with the brown liquid, which I assume was the contents of the toilet. I complained about this when I checked out that morning and said that the room should not be given to other guests until a plumber had resolved the issue. I haven't heard anything further as yet.

The location is great, the food was superb and all the staff were excellent and very friendly with nothing too much trouble.

The grounds, the staff were lovely and the breakfast delicious.

A little tired in places, including an old damp stain on the ceiling of our room, however it is a very old property and you expect wear and tear. It was very clean throughout though.

Very well situated for Lancaster. Excellent breakfast. Very warm welcome, made a change for someone to carry our bags, appreciated. Friendly staff all round. Beautiful setting. Nice big room.

En-suite needed a bit of an upgrade. After main staircase up to rooms, short series of steps would benefit from a handrail, if possible. A sign to indicate entry to the hall and car parking would clarify where to go for stay.
