Maple Retreat by Blue Spring

The unit was very clean… it sparkled when we arrived. It’s also quite modern-looking. The house of which it is a part appears to be just a few years old, in a neighbourhood of similar homes. We enjoyed sitting on the two wicker chairs outside the entry door, looking at the hectare or so of planted native bushes – very pretty. It’s also relatively inexpensive, at around $150 NZD when we visited in late January 2025. The bed was quite comfortable, though firm. The shower was excellent.

The unit is quite small, it feels like a very small hotel room. (It appears to be a converted small bedroom at one end of the house.) There supposedly is a kitchenette, but really, don’t even think about trying to do any sort of meal here. There is no actual kitchenette, just a clothes closet with a wooden tray. No pots or pans, no utensils, no sink, just a small box containing basic silverware and 2 plates, 2 cups, and 2 bowls. There is a microwave and a half-fridge, but that’s about it as for kitchen-type amenities. No electric fry pan, for example. You have to wash any dishes in the bathroom sink. The town Putaruru is also lacking in eating establishments. So, be prepared. (The pizzas from Orchard Thieves in town are commendable.) Also, the TV had a hard time bringing in some channels, even though it’s supposedly a streaming “smart” TV. My tablet also couldn’t access certain apps (news apps, etc), but was fine with others. So something is weird with their internet service. Parking is on the lawn, and if you have a larger vehicle you may not even be able to get round the corner onto the lawn. You’d have to park on the street. There are no indoor chairs, just a very small tabletop and two hard-top stools. So overall, extremely basic, though clean and fairly modern.

No air con unit in our room. We left the windows open at night , but breeze made blinds bang nosily so had to shut the windows . Parking space tight to manoeuvre into . Would have liked a bigger lock for guaranteed privacy on the door linking the “out of bounds “ hallway to the house.

Was a great halfway stop on our trip north. House was easy to find. Great instructions and communication. Room was exactly what we needed for a brief stopover. Very clean and tidy. Thanks for the chocolate treat!

Bed was a little firm (but that’s personal preference) which is my only comment otherwise everything was as I expected based on the profile.
