The Riverside Hideaway by Calton Living

The location was about a 15-minute walk from the main city train station. It was easy to get into the city either walking or by taxi for a reasonable price. The apartment was nice, and it had all the facilities you would want and clean. Access into the apartment was easy, clear instructions to follow and good communication from the host if required.

The apartment needs a little TLC, worn carpets, doors and walls in some locations, and the windows also need replacing, however working and safe. It would also be nice to have even one or two sachets of milk to put in your tea or coffee upon arrival. The price was a little high, I am from London and could get the same for less there.

I would like to highlight that the only thing we liked was the location. There was a bad review left from a woman that was solo travelling who said that the door could not be locked and you said that this issue was fixed, however it was not! It was still broken. Once locked with the KEY from the inside it was very hard to unlock. The water in the bathroom (sink) was constantly cold. It needs much renovation and the pictures are very edited. There was much noise from the neighbours and we felt unsafe. The smell outside the apartment was vile and is a health hazard! I have pictures of everything and will be contacting the appropriate authorities. There were bugs in the bathroom as well. The window issue in the bedroom is clearly something you’re aware of along with the rest of the issues and you do nothing to maintain it yet you charge a lot! This was the message I sent the host and I received a completely generic reply! Obviously the place is not maintained and the host doesn’t care!!!

Stockbridge is a beautiful! The location of this BnB is fantastic! It was a safe, warm place to clean up and rest between exploring Scotland.

Edinburgh is a VERY old city, so it's only natural that most of these older buildings will be a little worn. The shower was very small, almost too small for someone like me, and the apartment itself is a little creaky and a smidge damp. That being said, there was nothing I found that was neglected or unsanitary so don't worry about that!

Lovely flat in great location in Stockbridge nice to hear the water and was very quiet. Short walk to restaurants and to center of Edinburgh

DO NOT BOOK THIS LODGING! We had the misfortune of booking this property and it was a nightmare. We rent out our property so we understand what should be offered in a rental. We got there with a lot of luggage and we had two flights of stairs with no lift…Not a deal breaker, we are in our 50’s but still strong so no problem, just a workout. We get to the apartment and its a weird skeleton key that is very difficult to get open…it is easier to open and close from the outside but from the inside it took many tries and is really a pain in the arse and their email instructions say they have a book on the coffee table with instructions for everything but there was no book. Turns out the water heater which controls the heating system is off…..We spent the first night freezing with no heat…it was 10 degrees Celsius (50 Fahrenheit) in the apartment! We are from Arizona and froze!!! We emailed them about it after we found the water heater and turned it on (it was very different from American water heaters and I really had to figure it out)….There only response was “glad you figured it out”. They didn’t care at the least. We have refunded nights for much less. The bathroom was aweful, the sink faucets were loose, the bathtub surround was loose and cheap, and the shower was lukewarm at best. These people care very little for the quality of there rental. The wall was burnt from someone using a candle but we really didn’t care about that…..The living room was nice but the TV had no instructions and took awhile to figure out…..the washing machine was old and broken. The door sensor was messed up and it took pushing and manipulating the door to get it to start and stop. Super annoying. Just do yourself a favor and avoid this hole…..great location but the owners have zero respect for tenants and for the property at all.

The location is great. Comfortable bed with soothing sound of river. Communication with booking agent was pleasant, including easy access to the apartment and tips to enjoy the area.

Wish I had read the Poor reviews more closely as I see the issues noted have not been addressed. I checked out 2 days early with safety concerns after discovering the security chain was broken at the front door. As a solo female traveler, this was very alarming, and I had a bad premonition approaching the apartment as the stairs and hallway were very dirty and paint was peeling off of the walls. Once inside the apartment, the need for maintenance was apparent too. The walls and trim need to be painted. The carpets are tired and frayed. The worn leather sofa needs to be replaced. Prior reviews include helpful photos.

The location is great.

The state of the apartment is pretty bad and it desperately needs maintenance and redecoration. The windows are all knackered, difficult to see out of, paint peeling, all the fixtures are broken, difficult to open or just won't close. The letter box and security chain are broken on the front door. The carpets are tired and fraying at thresholds. The walls and woodwork paint is really old, marked and dirty. The radiators are thick with dust. The kitchen cupboard has a door hanging off. The kitchen wall is splattered with stains. The bathroom tiling is a mess and the basin taps are completely loose and move when trying to operate them. I could go on... The apartment itself is entered through a communal corridor which is below street level. It's damp, the carpet is really old and the wall paint is flaking onto the floor. Not a great entrance but not the fault of the apartment.. which has it's own issues.
