"The room was very comfortable and cozy, despite the shower being very cold."

7.0

I liked the location and the ease at finding the place.

The showers were very cold, and the electricity kept going in and out. I also ended up having to pay with cash despite seeing that they accepted card payments.

"Disappointing"

4.0

Safe neighborhood. The supermarket was in walking distance and the room had a kitchen. Electronical key cards. 24/7 security. WiFi. Hot water in the showers.

Kitchen was poorly equipped. Staff was not very communicative and nice. No good service. Everything was run down. No safe in the room. No card payment possible. We booked for two persons and I only provides one breakfast per room. It was not very clean. No information on load shedding was provided.

"Roomy, but noisy"

7.0

The room was nice and it was good priced. The cafe across the street is delicious. The BnB breakfast was also good.

The morning noise. Outside our window were people speaking very loudly. Plates were seemingly being slammed intentionally between 6:45-7:00 am. As someone who lives in the village and is always awakened by roosters and children screaming, I was looking to pay for some peace. That’s the only problem I had.

"Great staff, but overpriced for the shared housing experience."

6.0

The staff at Matt’s Bed & Breakfast were fantastic—always friendly, helpful, and quick to assist with any requests. Their kindness made my stay more comfortable, and I truly appreciated their efforts. Meeting the owner was also a highlight; she’s a lovely lady with great intentions for the lodge, and I genuinely hope it improves over time. The environment felt secure with I think a reliable security system, which gave me peace of mind at night. Also the keycards for the rooms were a plus. Additionally, the flexibility they showed when my payment was delayed was a thoughtful gesture I greatly appreciated. The room, though small, had its own bathroom, desk, and refrigerator. The house even had a space to cook if needed, which was convenient. And the fruit is growing in the garden and those tasted amazing. However, sharing the small house with couples as a solo female traveler was a major issue for me. It often felt uncomfortable, and this dynamic significantly affected my experience. While I enjoyed moments of peace when the house wasn’t crowded, the shared setup was a challenge.

I stayed at Matt’s Bed & Breakfast for a month, and while my experience was not entirely negative, there are definitely areas for improvement. If someone is staying for an extended period like a month, it’s essential not to base pricing on daily rates, as it becomes less competitive compared to other options in Malawi. The biggest downside was the price-to-quality ratio. There were no curtains for the bathroom window. Lucky I had my prayer cloth to cover this. They advertise WiFi, but it wasn’t available at all, which made working impossible. There were no television channels except for 1 soccer channel. Not a big issue for me but good to take into consideration when choosing Matt. Breakfast was very repetitive—chips and eggs every single day—and juice was only offered about four times in 30 days. You won’t be provided with a bottle of water, which is quite unusual as most other B&Bs typically include this. From the first until the 4th of January 2025, breakfast wasn’t served at all, with no apology or compensation offered. Basic amenities were lacking as well. Shampoo and soap weren’t provided beyond a small bar for handwashing, so you’ll need to bring your own toiletries. Towels and toilet paper are provided, which is a plus, but room cleaning is only done upon request—they won’t clean daily unless you ask. This wasn’t a major issue for me, as I valued the quiet moments for peace and prayer. Although I enjoyed my stay and carry a warm heart for the staff, I must be fair in rating. At $1,165 for a month, the price is steep compared to other accommodations in Malawi that offer better services for less. Sharing the house with strangers can also be challenging if customer service isn’t top-notch.
