Room big and spacious, clean, all the amenities available. Beautiful location. On arrival, Host was very nice and welcoming. Wish we could have stayed longer.

Unsafe, Unhygienic, and Terrible Service – Not Recommended. Our stay at De Opstal was a huge disappointment. Although the room was spacious, there were serious issues that made our stay not only unpleasant but, more importantly, unsafe. Unsafe Baby Cot & No Solution Provided The biggest issue was the baby cot (see attached photo). It was placed on high legs, had low sides, and the base could not be lowered. Our 16-month-old baby, who can stand, was at serious risk of falling out. We immediately raised this concern and remained constructive at all times, requesting either another baby cot or even a different room. Unfortunately, no solution was offered—we simply had to deal with it. Letting our child sleep in a regular bed was not an option for us, which caused a lot of stress. Severe Fly Infestation & Unhygienic Conditions On top of that, the room was infested with an extreme number of flies (see attached photos)—both dead and alive—throughout all areas. This was not just a few annoying flies but a full-blown infestation. The staff offered to spray the room with insect repellent. While we reluctantly agreed, we felt very uncomfortable about it. Our baby had to sleep there shortly after, and my wife is pregnant, so we were deeply concerned about the effects of the toxic spray on her and our unborn child. Untrustworthy & Non-Existent Customer Service Since our daughter’s and unborn baby’s health is our top priority, we immediately decided to leave the accommodation and book another stay elsewhere. We did not spend a single moment in the room. Upon departure, the receptionist assured us that we would receive a full refund. Three days after leaving, I contacted the accommodation to ask about the refund. At first, I received no response. After sending a follow-up message the next day, I was finally told that there would be no refund after all.

Beautifully furnished, spacious room with crisp linen. Beautifully appointed bathroom with lux feel and finish. Great attention to detail and catering to the needs of a guest. As a solo traveller, I felt safe, welcome and pampered. What more could a traveller want?

De Opstal Country Lodge is a beautiful, romantic retreat just outside of Oudtshoorn - an ideal location for those seeking peace and quiet. While the city itself didn’t really vibe with us, we did enjoy our stay (& the fantastic Ebony & Ivory restaurant nearby). The lodge has spacious rooms and very good facilities, and while the furnishings are a bit old-school, that’s part of its original charm. If you’re into modern minimalism, this might not be your place, but if you appreciate a warm, character-filled country-style stay, you’ll love it here. A real highlight was the beautiful garden - an oasis of greenery and tranquility with lots of birds in it. But what truly stands out is the dedication of the staff and owners. They are incredibly engaged, friendly, and go out of their way to ensure an exceptional stay, handling even personal matters spontaneously and with care. You can feel that a lot of passion has been put into running this place. The WiFi was okay but sometimes slow, so if you need to work (as we did), you’ll want to have a good mobile data bundle. Overall, a charming and welcoming lodge, made special by its wonderful hospitality, peaceful atmosphere, and lush garden retreat.

As the floor in our accommodation had recently been polished (?), it smelled a little of the product used.

We found ourselves rather isolated as it was very quiet (a long way from town) with hardly any other guests. Very big dining room with only us and another couple in it.
