Splendid Cheerful 2-bedroom residential

Great location and nice people.

Basement apt with poor lighting and ventilation.

I liked the location and the square footage for a family of 5. It was nice that we had different rooms. I did love the fact that the host was quick to fix things that he could help.

The bed was so hard. It was like a concrete slab. The bathroom had this weird slant, so taking a shower was very tricky and unsafe, especially for smaller kids. They only had 1 fork. They also did not have any flat pans for baking veggies. They only had stove top pans. The stove was gas so even with the vent going, it made the entire place smell like propane. The lamps in the bedroom didn't work. They is not a separate thermostat for this space. Also this place wasn't very clean. There was a bug that we found dead, there was left over food in the freezer and the fridge was gross looking. They also had Christmas, 4th of July and fall decorations all out at once so that was kinda weird. The kitchen mat was saturated with water. Every time we stepped on it, water came splashing out. The host did come and remove bug and left over food.

The apartment was quirky, comfortable, and well appointed. It was a short drive or bus ride to the Metro station for anywhere else you'd like to go, while being far enough from the city to avoid the hassle of the city. The property owner was very responsive through messaging and was often on-site in the connected residence. She was always quick to answer any questions. Check in and check out were very simple. The water pressure and temperature were very good, as well. The living room furniture and back bedroom furniture were very comfortable.

The bed in the master bedroom was a bit firm, but to the point that we couldn't adjust, and that is just a personal preference, but it was one of the very few negatives. There is also only a clothes dryer. Not a huge problem, but a washer/dryer set would have been helpful. There is also no thermostat in the unit. The temperature is controlled in the main house. Again, the owner is very response to messages and very accommodating, so this is barely an inconvenience.

We traveled as four adults and one child under 10 and found this property to be an excellent value compared to other options. We knew from the start that it was a basement unit, and that wasn’t an issue for us given the many positives—free street parking and only a 20-minute drive to downtown D.C. Even during the cherry blossom festival, we were able to get around the city and find parking in the center. The place was clean, the kitchen had the basics, and the neighborhood felt safe. Check-in was smooth, and the owner was always very polite. The outdoor patio was also a nice bonus. If we travel again as a group of four or five, we’d happily stay here again!

The basement setting and stairs might not suit everyone, but we had no issues. A small suggestion: it would be nice to have some ground coffee provided considering there is a coffee maker, though we ended up enjoying local cafes anyway.

Very central location to most attractions, no more than 30 minutes with traffic, 15-20min without.

A couple things I think other seeking parties should be aware of: Based on the images provided it was kinda misleading, didn’t know I’d be staying in a basement (wasn’t an issue, just wish they had emphasized that on the ad). It being a basement you’re limited in certain aspects like when it comes to cooking. You’ll have to put the fan they have down stairs at the kitchen entrance while you cook, so that the smoke alarm doesn’t go off. Listing also says there’s a futon on the property, there wasn’t. Just three sofas, one being just large enough for you to sleep on and a blow up mattress. Once again, not an issue but not as advertised. It being a basement, there is an upstairs with tenants that live there so it’s not surprising to hear the floors creaking loudly or babies crying well into the late night. That being said, it was displeasing having to tolerate an entire birthday celebration and noise for pretty much the entire day until about 2am. Now I understand it was someone’s birthday to celebrate, but I’d have at least expected a notice of an event happening during my stay or even NOT renting out your property with an event in mind, while you’re hosting your home to other paying tenants.
