New Great Shanghai Female Hostel

Prime location, and the fact that it is an all-female house made it extremely comfortable. The shared room has 12 beds, but the room is very large with high ceilings so it felt spacious. There are two available bathrooms with showers (one en suite, and one downstairs), so it was never too long of a wait (though, I'm not sure how it would be when fully booked). Everyone takes their shoes off before entering the house, so it feels clean and comfortable. Thank you Jean (and Mariana) for a lovely stay!

Overall I have no complaints :) It is worth noting that the AC is only on from 8am to 8pm, so during the day it can get pretty hot in the shared room. However, the downstairs area usually remains a lot cooler so if you need to stop by the hostel in middle of the day, I'd recommend staying there (there's also many cafes nearby with AC). I had a minor maintenance request (squeaky bed) and the team was so quick to repair it, so feel free to send Jean a quick message for anything that might need attention.

-There are no lockers -They charge 3 ringgit more if you want the lower bed, which is not specified in booking so I find it abusive. -The AC only works from 8pm to 8am and there is only one fan for 16 people, which is not even noticeable in the beds upstairs, so you cannot be in the room during the day without sweating, is like a sauna. -The bathroom floods and you have to shower with your feet soaking, and then you have to sweep so that the water goes down. -The common area is very small so there were people who stayed in the room talking and making noise as if they were in the bar. For the same price you can find better places

Great place for a solo traveller. I was greated by Jane, probably one of the nices hostesses I've encountered. She was helpful, very professional and generous. The place is comfortable and controlled. Very recommended. Will go back if I'm ever in Penang

1. good location - near public bus stops, near convenience shops, near Nasi Kandar Line Clear Restaurant and Chowrasta Market 2. just opposite the hostel is Masjid Benggali (you can go pray at the mosque) and a 24hr self service coin laundry (you really appreciate having clean clothes during travel) 3. there is a pass card to enter / exit the main door.

1. noise from the nearby pubs during night time - suggest to install day curtains and thicker night curtains to reduce the noise 2. the windows in the dorm are always closed so the ventilation is poor. the air can get a bit stuffy at times. 3. the aircond got too cold in the middle of the night and there was no aircond controller supplied. 4. the bathroom floor in the dorm was wrongly tiled so water pooled under your feet while taking shower (ughh!). you have to use a sweeper to direct the water into the drain hole. 5. there are different rates for lower and upper bunk beds which is not indicated during booking.com room description

Clean and in a good location. There are many restaurants or night markets nearby. The bus stop is very close (there is a free bus to ferry terminal or around the city.) The hostel lady is very friendly and helpful. There is a kitchen available.It is perfect for backpackers or someone who like to stay longer.

At the beginning, I spent a few time to find the location.
