New Great Shanghai Female Hostel

New Great Shanghai Hostel is in the perfect location, so easy to walk around. Jean is very kind and always willing to help when needed. The bed is comfortable and the room is very clean. The female dorm has its own bathroom which is great. I found the room temperature was comfortable and I think its better to save energy with the air conditioner only being used at night. I am actually staying longer than planned because I enjoyed it so much.

Jene was fantastic! Very helpful, always ready there when needed. The room was very clean and comfortable and the place very close to everything you'd need. It was a great experience and i would recommend it very much if you're in Penang.

Clean and well organized. The host was super friendly and attentive.

I LOVED the owner/manager, she was incredibly friendly and forthcoming. It was clear that she wanted me to enjoy my stay in Penang and at the hostel. The hostel is also very picturesque with beams, high ceilings and wooden floors (that can creak sometimes!). The artwork was also a nice touch. You're in the centre of Georgetown, a stone throw from whatever you may need to find. All in all, the value for money was definitely here.

As this place is opposite a mosque, be warned that the morning and evening calls for prayer are LOUD. I was abruptly awoken in the morning, so just something to consider.

I honestly don't know how this hostel got such positive reviews. My experience for the 2 nights I spent there: - There is no one around the hostel most of the time, you have to communicate with the manager through Whatsapp - Then I arrived, I had to make my own bed (very weird), the room was not cleaned, as the trash was sitting around the the beds of the guests who have left were all messy and not fixed. - This is the hottest hostel I have ever been to. The AC does 0 work, regardless if it's on or off. The schedule is ridiculous- turn on at 9.30pm which means no one can go to bed before midnight, switch off at 7am, which means no one can sleep after 8am. This is like jail, not like relaxation. The fan was the only thing which saved us from death from overheating, and it was good we were only 3 people (in a room for 12)!!! - The mosque across the street will destroy you!!!! 4.30am and you literally feel you are sitting next to the priest! Just forget about any sleep (if the heat doesn't finish you, the priest will!) By the way there is another mosque behind as well... - I really wanted to move but it was the end of Ramadan and all places were either booked or super-expensive. So I just suffered through it. Please don't make my mistake!
