O Cantinho da Mariazinha by Amazing Madeira

Die Lage in der Altstadt. Zu Fuss fast alles zu erreichen. Die vorweihnachtlich Ausgestaltung von Funchal ist immer wieder beeindruckend.

The location was perfect, set along the colourful cobbled streets of Rua Santa Maria, where every door is painted as part of an open-air art project. It was also conveniently next door to a lovely bakery. I had a very warm welcome on arrival, and the entrance up the stairs was beautiful, with soft jazz playing in the mornings that created such a relaxing atmosphere. The bedroom was exceptionally clean, I could smell the fresh polish when I walked in and it included English tea, a kettle, and a fridge, towels, shampoo, shower gel, soap and toilet roll. The instructions provided were very clear, and the host’s English was excellent, which made everything even easier. The area had plenty of restaurants, a local Spar, a post box, and the cable cars and marina were only a five-minute walk away. I felt exceptionally safe throughout my stay.

The only small downside was a bit of noise late at night on the evening the Christmas lights were being switched on, but this was understandable given the event.

Ideale Lage, komfortable Betten, sehr freundliches und hilfsbereites Personal, alles vorhanden was man benötigt, Parkhaus in der Nähe.

Frühstück nach ein paar Tagen etwas eintönig, aber ansonsten wirklich völlig ok

The owners/staff - Caterina (and her sister whose name escapes me - sorry), Veronica and the cleaners were just lovely. All of them were extremely helpful when we needed help navigating the Funchal bus system, looking for my lost phone, etc. The hotel is more spacious than we expected - public areas and the rooms. All areas have great character. The beds were very comfortable and there was a fridge in the room - brilliant for a 2-star (I’ve stayed in less well equipped 4-star hotels).Quiet little private outdoor areas for sitting. Located on a street in the old town with lots of restaurants (that close at a reasonable time so no noise problem) and great craft shops/galleries. Two minute walk from the main cable car to Monte (gardens and basket run).

Three small things could improve the overall stay/impression: i) a little more variety at breakfast ii) tidying up of bits of painted woodwork on doorframes iii) replacing the chipped bath. We want to make it clear that none of these things marred our stay and if we were to return to Funchal, we would happily book O Cantinho da Mariazinha again.
