Alex is an exceptional host, very hospitable. It was a lovely stay, a very authentic village experience. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience what life is really like in a rural African village. Expect lots of smiles, beautiful night skies and tasty Nshima!

Volunteering dilemma – warm people but uncomfortable donation pressure This review reflects only my personal experience, and others may feel differently. The people in the village themselves were kind and welcoming. Everyone I met greeted me warmly, and I genuinely felt their hospitality. However, from the first day, a tip box was placed in my room and I was repeatedly asked to make donations. I was told many times about the children’s difficult situation — that they lacked shoes, that classrooms were in poor condition, and that donations were needed for their future. I paid approximately $100 for a two-day stay, which I understood to already include support for the community. The accommodation itself was very basic (weak network connection, no hot water, unstable electricity), which I completely accepted as part of the experience. The difficulty came when donation requests became direct and persistent. At one point, I was asked to pay for a family’s daily meal and told to contribute a fixed amount together with another guest. I deeply wanted to help. However, being repeatedly asked for money created discomfort and emotional conflict between wanting to support the community and feeling pressured. I believe sustainable support works best when visitors first feel respected as people, naturally leading to a desire to contribute — rather than feeling obligated. I sincerely hope future visitors can experience an environment where cultural exchange, dignity, and voluntary support exist in balance. I left the village feeling conflicted, wishing that tourism here could evolve toward empowering education and long-term independence for the children and community.

"A home away from home. ♡"

10.0

Nothing - staying there was an absolute privilege.

"Such a good, friendly and interesting place to stay"

10.0

This is such a good place to stay to see real Zambia. It’s very authentic and everyone in the village is very nice. There’s lots to do such as sunset canoeing, a cooking class and early morning bird watching with the added bonus of seeing the sunset over the bush. You’re made to feel very welcome by everyone. I’d highly recommend a few days here. Even if you can’t stay overnight it’s worth contacting Alex to see about going for a morning or afternoon and taking part in some of the activities. I would certainly stay here again and recommend to anyone.
