"A slice of Moroccan heaven"

10.0

A Slice of Moroccan Heaven: Auberge Le Refuge Review If you're looking for a sanitised, five-star all-inclusive with plasma TVs and poolside cocktail service, then Auberge Le Refuge isn't for you. But if you want a truly authentic, stress-free holiday that recharges your soul and immerses you in the heart of Morocco, then this place is an absolute dream. We spent a week here and it was one of the best holidays we've ever had. The journey alone is a treat. After picking up our car at Agadir airport, the scenic 90-minute drive to the Atlas Mountains was breathtaking, with stunning views at every turn. Auberge Le Refuge is high up in the mountains, so it’s wonderfully remote. Just a short walk away, though, there’s a small hamlet with a shop and a couple of cafes, so you don't feel completely isolated. Authentic Food and Friendly Faces The food here is simply outstanding. They serve incredible, authentic Moroccan dishes that are not only delicious but also incredibly cheap. The tagines are big enough to share between two people and cost around £6! We had a few nights where we opted for something different, like spaghetti bolognese for two, which cost a total of £2.80. We ate at the auberge for six of our seven nights, enjoying huge breakfasts, fresh orange juice, and mint tea throughout the day, all for less than £100 for the entire week. The staff are the heart of this place. They are a genuinely cracking bunch of lads, and nothing is too much trouble. A special shout-out to Mustapha, who is Morocco’s answer to Manuel and made us feel so welcome. Good to Know Before You Go Cash is king: They don't take card payments, and the nearest ATM is a 40-minute drive away in Agadir. Stock up on cash before you arrive. Bring your own booze: They don’t serve alcohol, so if you fancy a drink, grab some at the duty-free shop at the airport. Simple but spacious rooms: Our room and bathroom were basic but clean and spacious.
